Behind The Scenes of the TypeScript Course

A friend DM'd me on Twitter asking if I could share the "behind the scenes" of my TypeScript Course so I said sure, I'd be happy to.

Here are some things I figured others might want to know.

What's this TypeScript Course?

Back in November 2021, I started working on a TypeScript Course. I did my first course, Vim for VSCode back in September 2020.

This course is a bit more ambitious. I teamed up with the Badass Team this time instead of going solo. Basically I focus on content and they help me with everything else. Eventually we'll launch a paid product and split revenue 60 (me)/40 (them).

We have high hopes for this course. Think Epic React level of industry impact. That's what we're shooting for.

What's the current state?

At the time of writing, we have a free email course with three modules. They're very high quality and I spent hours and hours making them. Each module is between 4-6 emails.

It's run via ConvertKit. The Badass Team has worked with it in the past and uses it for all their email stuff. I think they've even built special tooling so that they can author the email content in MDX.

There are 1400 subscribers to our free email course. Our goal would be to grow this as much as possible before launching a paid product later this year.

We recently recorded a podcast season about migrating to TypeScript and plan to launch that soon. This should help grow the email list.

Their Process

I wanted to touch briefly on their process:

  1. Research
  2. Design
  3. Production
  4. Delivery

These phases are done at every step of the process. From initial landing page -> email courses -> live workshops -> self paced course.

One of the other things they repeat a lot is "Less risk. Less assumptions, more value for students." Every iteration is less risky because we have more students and can chat with them directly. This leads to higher quality, but also ensures we're focusing on the right things.

What's next?

The next steps are to take the current modules and turn them into paid workshops. We'll then replace the email course with something smaller. And after that, we'll later turn the paid workshops into a self-paced video + exercise-based series.

Something else?

Do you have a question about something I didn't cover? Feel free to drop a comment below or DM me on Twitter: @jsjoeio.

🙌 Thanks for sharing, hope to get updates

Curious to know more about the MDX emails 🤔

Wish I could share more but I haven't seen it. I think it's closed-source too but supposedly it helps move a lot quicker.

      yeah, sounds really interesting
