Show IH: a grotesquely over-engineered Board Game Timer

I play board games, and we need a timer to keep the game times under control. But all the existing ones ran on single phones that had to be moved from person to person. So I created a timer that synchronizes across any number of devices so everyone can have a phone within reach. ๐Ÿคณ

Unwittingly, I had also created the only timer that works for the online board-game market! ๐ŸŒ

And then I went crazy and spent 13 months adding feature after feature to the poor thing! ๐Ÿ˜… I can now change the room lights to the current player color! (Bluetooth rocks)

The lights changing colors is truly awesome. Nice work.

    Hello Gustav,

    I love it ...

For your next project, a chess timer. I have wanted an online linked chess timer for years.

    1. 1

But... just use this app. Make it a two player game. It supports both Fischer and Bronstein timing modes. You can even combine the two, something no other chess clock does to my knowledge. Or just use the count up mode if you don't want a hard limit.

      1. 1

Ok. I see now. I'm glad I commented. Your time is very impressive. I will use it...

Of you do, please give me some feedback. Anything you think might make it better, is like to know and happy gaming!

Love this! I'm a big board gamer too and this is a fun, helpful idea. Catan and Wingspan will be a much more colorful and timely affair.

    1. 2

Thanks! Love Wingspan! I'd love it if you gave the Shared Game Timer a try on one of your games and let me know your feedback. I'm very responsive to implementing suggestions from my users.

Will do! Excited to try it out!

Nice! Love this product. I rarely play board games, but when I do, it tends to be with family or friends during the holidays or incessantly rainy weekends, and I try to stay off my phone as much as possible, in an attempt to "be present" and enjoy the quality time. It would be awesome if this product was some sort of app that blocked all phone notifications! That way it would be a digital tool as opposed to a timer on my generally-distracting phone.

    1. 2

I 100% agree that phones can be distracting around the gaming table. That is why I created the remote control feature. With that, you can use many different kinds of remote controls (from selfie-shutters to gamepads to little electronics gadgets) to do things like end your turn, and then no one actually touches a phone at all. I think this is my favorite feature of the app! :-)

Check out the links below. Maybe start with the video to get an idea, then if interested what other remotes may work, see the link.

This thing is sick! I love the site's design. Might I ask, what's your backend built using?

    1. 2

Thanks! The design is actually the thing I'm a bit unhappy about, so nice to hear you think it's nice. (I'm a practical man, so the design is... practical. ๐Ÿ˜„)

It is a server less design (direct client-db access), running on Firebase, which also handles the synching. The UI is Vue/Nuxt/Vuetify. The 'extras' like TTS and Bluetooth/Gamepad remotes are all web APIs.

      1. 1

The site's practical design is good enough for sure. I would concentrate on spreading the word.

        1. 1

Never a true word written. I know I need to spread the word but I suck at marketing. I'm a programmer. I love creating but marjwring.. I just feel like I'm bothering people. ๐Ÿ˜•
