Put your analytics into your own context

I've only put in maybe 5 hours total into creating my YouTube videos and now they have been viewed for a total of 10 hours.

That's a 2x return on my time. Feels great seeing progress in the right direction. I know it's not some crazy milestone at all but it brings up a good point on sticking to it when getting started.

I love this way of thinking about creating content and I've got to admit I learned it elsewhere.

There was an interesting video from Garry Tan (VC, started Initialized Capital) on how to put numbers in your own context for your youtube channel.

Sure, I was only getting a few hundred views. And if I started looking at other people's youtube channels, I might get really discouraged. But, for a 5 minute video, that took me about 3 hours to make, 500 views was about 41 hours of other people viewing it. And so, to me I could just do the simple math. that's about a 13.3x return on my time.

  1. 2

I really like this approach and putting your numbers in a positive light (especially the 2x watch time to create time).

How else do you think you can do to get 2x value from your time creating these videos?

    1. 1

So the real value for me is two-fold:

      1. Improve my speaking and content creation skills
      2. Build and grow an audience of people interested in my work/thoughts

My side project is sendfox.com/deliberatepython , it's a web app that helps you master Python fundamentals faster with spaced repetition.

I'm planning on making some Python videos and hopefully will grow an audience that would be interested in using the project :)
