You hear the word “Focus” a lot in the entrepreneur space, and to be honest it’s always been something I’ve struggled with. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I like to work on multiple projects, but I’m always impressed by people who have built their businesses in one area.
That brings me to Alex Chisnall. Who pre COVID who runs a podcasting agency which was turning over 5-figures a year and is now doing multiple 6-figures with a vision to reach 7-figures.
Podpreneur, his podcast agency launched after the success of his own podcast, ScrewItJustDoIt, and as he put it, “it changed his life”.
I interviewed him to find out exactly how he’s done this, so let’s break it down.
How Alex Makes Money
The Podcast Agency
The agency basically works with customers in three different ways:
Done For You: They offer a service to setup and run your podcast for you end to end. Prices start from £1,500 and go up to £3,500 depending on the number of shows you need help with. You could either buy their services on a one-off basis or on a monthly subscription.
Done With You: Alex’s team will setup your podcast strategy with you over 90 days. You have your own dedicated podcast coach who will meet with you and help you to make it happen!
Do It Yourself: Alex has a beginners training course for people who want to start by dipping their toes in the water. It’s priced at £97 but he’s tempted to increase it.
Podcasting Consultations
Podcasters often need Alex’s help with specific aspects of their podcast and given his experience he offers 2-hour consultations that he charges £299 for.
ScrewItJustDoIt Podcast Sponsors
Alex doubled his original sponsorship rate from £3,000 to £6,000 per month after his podcast agency really started picking up and brands began to notice his engaged audience. For £6,000 per month, Alex promotes the sponsor on all of his 12 podcast episodes plus a bunch of extra value that he describes in the interview. That’s £72,000 per year as a content creator, not bad at all.
Where Customers Come From
During the 5-figure days, Alex was relying on LinkedIn outreach to generate interest in his podcasting agency but that was hit and miss.
What had a large impact on the business was when Clubhouse launched on the scene. Alex was quick to setup a daily Clubhouse room (this is where we met actually) and started to grow the audience over time. As his audience started to like and trust him, enquiries started to come in. Alex estimates that Clubhouse is responsible for 20 customers over 6 months and that’s a mix across his products of done for you and done with you.
On top of that, Alex has found that interviewing guests on his own Podcast has been great for business. I hope Alex works with us! :)
Alex also has a Facebook group, leverages email marketing, enjoys referrals, and most importantly is loving Instagram.
In fact, sales often start with a simple Instagram DM (direct message), where he’ll then get the person’s email and phone number and continue the conversation. He’s not quick to jump on a call though, and will send a deck across that explains his services and pricing before scheduling a call. This really helps to set the expectations.
