Shopify app ideas (from Shopify).
Yesterday, Shopify published a tweet titled: "5 Categories Merchants Are Searching For Most in the App Store", giving us 15 viable Shopify App ideas we can build.
Bootstrapped founders LOVE building Shopify apps (we have a bunch of profitable Shopify apps in our Products database):
SuperLemon ($29k/mo) allows you to add a "Chat via WhatsApp" button to your Shopify Store
WiseBundle ($25k/mo) is a Shopify app to create bundles
StoreMapper ($21k/mo) is a Shopify app for larger stores to display where people can buy their products in real life
Shopify is probably the best B2B platform to build on.
They've been supporting third party developers for years. (Shopify.dev is frequently updated and has a vibrant community.)
We've seen tens, if not hundreds of successful Shopify apps making (here's one making $15k+/mo.)
The fees are quite affordable (you get charged 0% in fees for your first 1 million in revenue).
The problem: There are too many apps you could build! Where should you start?
According to Shopify, these are top 5 trending categories on its app store:
SKU and barcode management (+ 182% page views)
The JTBD: E-commerce merchants need better inventory tracking across sales channels.
Apps you can build (according to Shopify):
Multi-channel SKU syncing tool
AI-powered barcode generator and scanner
Inventory forecasting based on SKU performance
The JTBD: Businesses want seamless connections between Shopify and their ERP systems
Apps you can build (according to Shopify):
Real-time inventory sync between Shopify and popular ERPs
Automated order fulfillment and accounting integrations
Custom ERP connectors for specific industries
The JTBD: Merchants need tools to create and manage compelling product descriptions
Apps you can build (according to Shopify):
AI-assisted product description generator
Bulk product content editor with SEO optimization
Multi-language product content management system
The JTBD: There's a growing concern for protecting merchant and customer data
Apps you can build (according to Shopify):
Advanced fraud detection for high-risk orders
GDPR and CCPA compliance automation tool
Two-factor authentication for customer accounts
The JTBD: Merchants need better internal communication tools
Things you can build:
Real-time order alert system for staff
Task management and assignment tool for store teams
Performance dashboard with customisable staff notifications
Are you building a Shopify app in any of the categories below? Let me know in the comments !
Former top 20% of Shopify store owner here. Sold in December. There are indeed opportunities for app developers in the Shopify ecosystem. On the surface, nearly every one of the suggestions above is met with one or more existing apps—even natively by Shopify. However, the devil is in the details and I think some end user and shop operator interviews would yield an enterprising dev some good options worthy of their time.
That said, recognize these points:
-The easy days of e-commerce are past us. Cost management, cash turns and margin are all required mastery at this point for shop operators. Your app must appeal to this demand. No nice to haves. It must make or save money.
-There’s a significant bias against apps at this point. Mostly due to subscription costs stacking up. You start with a basic Shopify subscription of $30 and the next thing you know you’re looking at $1,000 of subscriptions stacked onto the store. You’re fighting that stack of subscriptions every month. Be critical to the business (see above). Churn is as easy as a DELETE button in the admin interface.
-I strongly believe the real play is a bundle of app functionality that’s 80% of the functionality for 20% of the cost. Take the 5 most common apps a shop owner will install 90% of the time and make a suite (like zoho vs Salesforce) and sell a single subscription. This reduces churn risk due to diversification, consolidates dollars spent in the ecosystem by shop owners, and could create a better functional and technical experience. Either build the app suite yourself or consolidate existing apps by way of acquisition.
Hope this helps to shed some light on an opportunity from a different angle.

I am working on my shopify automation and omichannnel automation, what feature would people pay for and whats currently missing that will provide real genuine value to people.
I was thinking of even a template marketplace that allows developers to create faster solution hosted on the platform and monetise it and also solutions for store owners that is dynamic, ultimately even allowing a cradle to the grave type system where you can use all our solutions and custom no code solution to create your own shopify store in minutes and have it working in no time.
store owners can see metrics on dashboard especially psychoanalytic metrics.
Think of it like zapier/make + google analytics studio had a baby
Ideas please and help us validate this. IF i get more than 1000 upvotes (i.e. < 0.00039%) its a go and every single votes get something for free at least a coffee :)
It’s incredible how much opportunity there is in the Shopify ecosystem right now, especially with such clear demand for tools that make merchants' lives easier. Building Shopify apps for these high-demand categories is a smart move for bootstrapped founders, and I love the practical examples of apps like SuperLemon and WiseBundle already achieving success. The variety of JTBD (Jobs To Be Done) across different categories really highlights how diverse the Shopify merchant needs are—especially in areas like SKU management and ERP integration.
It’s also great to see Shopify supporting developers so well, making it easier for bootstrapped founders to thrive. For anyone looking to get started with their own app, these categories are definitely a strong starting point.
I am building the MyBranz FTC Compliant Reviews app that lets stores comply with the FTC in review management. Our algorithms cover irrelevant and fake reviews that a store's competitor may post but ensure genuine customer experiences are shared. They are helping stores be transparent to rebuild customer trust and reduce returns.
Hey Indie Hackers! Built a web or mobile app but moved on to something new? Don’t let your hard work go to waste—list your app on AppShopp co (link in my bio) and start earning effortlessly. We’ll handle the rest!
Amazing ideas! I have also created an AI app to do product photography using Flux and LoRA for realism.
I only checked one of these, but there are over a dozen ai product description apps.
