For anyone running a SaaS, was it worth posting to free sites like Capterra, but also TechCrunch, etc.? Also, how often do you update your information there?
Thanks!
I have some interesting perspective here: I used to work for Capterra!
I can tell you that posting there (and to similar sites - it does not hurt you to get your product out on as many of these types of sites as possible, even if most of these ranking sites wish you would only post to them and nowhere else) is a good way to get your product out there, but getting excellent reviews on these sites from your users will be what makes the difference.
Pretty much any way you sort on those site, the software with no reviews ranks right at the bottom, which means that the bloggers for the sites (the ones who aggregate roundups, "Top X Software for Y Purpose," and comparisons) don't even glance at your product when writing about software... which is where the biggest traffic pushes happen.
So my advice is to add your product to those sites, really encourage your users to review you on the sites, and then hope that you break into a relevant blog post, which will get a huge number of eyes on your site.
As a personal anecdote, I remember contacting software companies to get updated information on their products so I could update articles I wrote, and getting panicked emails and phone calls begging me not to remove them from the list (even when that wasn't my intent anyway), as a single article accounted for the vast majority of their traffic. This happened multiple times, with multiple types of software, and stunned me every time.
As a side note, if you want to get into those types of articles / software roundups, make sure your software profile is fully completed on the site, and try to avoid hiding your pricing. That was the #1 way I researched the articles that I wrote, and the harder a software made it for me to find out the basic info I needed, the less likely I was to write about it at all.
I'll try this. Taught about posting to multiple sites a complete profile. Will see the results. Thanks @HaldenIng
Wow, thank you very much for all these insights, this is super helpful!
The anecdote is very interesting - sounds like it's important to companies to keep their info on these sites up to date.
I would say it's VERY important, but still secondary to getting lots of high-quality reviews.
Thanks for sharing that valuable insight. The thing about getting ranked high on review sites to get listed on roundup blog posts is great advice.
As the IT Manager for a group of SME companies I find I use capterra and similar sights a lot, and they do affect my choices and which ones I look at first. Alternative.to is another one and so are the "Top XXX Thingamjiggers in 20YY" blog posts.
Thanks for the suggestion, I use Alternative.to all the time but hadn't thought about it in this context.
Mates, I'd like to suggest giving a try to - SaaSHub. That's a product I work on and alternative.to is one of my top competitors.
I'd appreciate some feedback. For example, apart from Alternative.to being more established, do you think it's better in other ways?
I like SaaSHub. I was checking out the top-backlinks of some of my competition and discovered that SaasHub drives traffic. Great to know it's created by a fellow indie.
All the best.
(will be listing https://www.lightcat.io on it soon)
Thanks. I will make sure it's approved promptly :)
The most value is probably going to come from the sites with high volume traffic (Capterra, G2, etc) and after that they’re only valuable for links. Can help build a solid link profile in the beginning and get a jumpstart for SEO.
Thanks for your suggestion!
Hi, I can post your project to 150 websites including Capterra, Alternative.to, SaasHub etc. Here is the link: https://launchpropeller.com/#/submitplaces
Hey @cloogshicer, I'd like to suggest giving a try to SaaSHub. The project I work on. Capterra, and G2 Crowd are among my competitors.
Moreover, you can post your software products to the SaaS Tribune and that should bring in some additional traffic.
Is there any automated services that lets you post and keep those sites updated?
Keep in mind that links on bad sites can always hurt your SEO (at least I think) so I would consider the specific site before posting to just any site out there. I'm sure the big name ones aren't an issue though.
That's a great point, I hadn't thought about that, thank you! Is there way to figure out if a site has negative impact on your SEO?
I wish I knew of one to tell before hand, but the only way I know of is once they have already linked, I think google will alert you on the search console and I think ahrefs.com may have something.

Hey, thanks for your response! I agree, it certainly won't do any harm :) Was just wondering if the traffic is meaningful enough to justify the time spent on researching all the directories, creating all the profiles, etc.
Is there a list of these things somewhere? :)
A quick google search for 'SaaS directories list' or similar got me some good results.

Yup, will do that, thanks for your help!
