A live video example of user testing

I recently published a video for my UX course on rapid prototype and user testing, where me and Matthew test his product with my girlfriend.

What we did is a "Think out loud" usability testing session and our goal is to understand if the UX flow that Matthew designed is easy to follow and understand.

Hope it's useful and let me know what you think!

Have you ever tried user testing as well? What was your experience with it?

I clicked on the link for your course, and the "What you'll learn" section uses images with a text VERY small that it immediately gave me a bad impression about your UX expertise.

Seems to be a Gumroad issue as right clicking and opening the images shows they have higher quality and larger text.

Damn, my bad I didn't test it on mobile and I added the images in rush last week to launch the course and meet the pre-sales deadline 😅

I'll drop the images, change it to native text and will add a link for a proper course preview in Notion!

Thank you a lot for spotting these and sharing your thoughts :)

    Great video Jim.

Would you say that it is okay to use close relations such as a girlfriend or are they too biased and have you had user tests with people you do not know, and if so what was the difference in their feedback?

      Thanks a lot man!

Good question :) Well I wouldn't say it's a problem as long as you explain them the process and tell them you want their honest open thoughts. Same goes for people you don't know.

From my experience with testing the main challenge is to make them feel safe to express themselves and tell you in a very honest way if they feel something sucks. Especially people that don't know you try to be gentle all the time.

On top of this, I try to avoid using the word "user testing". Once you tell them you will test something with them, they feel like they are tested and ask many times if they are doing the right thing or if they are doing something wrong. This is totally wrong cause they should feel like just using a product, not taking a test. I keep reminding them that "you are doing good, there is no right or wrong, just tell me how you feel and what you think"

Finally regarding the people you test with, my advice is keep it mixed. Testing with friends, family and colleagues (in case you work in a team) can be most of the times fine. But it can be a problem if you always test only with them.

Great points that make sense. I mean the point of a test is that it should be easy and fast to conduct right.

Great work Jim, keep it up :-)

Thanks! Yes exactly, speed and simplicity is the key 🙂

Surely. Great piece of advise. I'll keep that in mind when we are due 🤙
