The AI startup I joined just cracked 400,000 users using PLG methodologies - here’s how they’ve done it.

The startup I work for is called Tactiq, they’re an AI Meeting Note Taker for virtual meetings. The company has been able to crack 400,000 users using PLG methodologies and today we’re launching our next bet.

The company has focused on growth loops that drive user adoption and retention within the product itself. These are as follows - I’ll dive into each one further below.

  1. Shareable Moments: Share meeting transcripts with team members via email
  2. Virality: In app notification that the user is using Tactiq
  3. Collaboration: Building knowledge bases with team specific spaces for meeting transcripts (launching today!)
  4. Referral: Free Meeting credits for referring users

1. Share Meeting Transcripts

Premise

One of the most difficult things about taking meetings is the duality you face of either deciding to focus and not take any notes, or lose some of your focus and take notes. A lot of teams work around this with a dedicated note taker, while others just take high level notes.

Tactiq taps into this tedious duality by enabling users who are using Tactiq to automatically share the meeting transcript and notes with others who are not using the app via email. This means that at the start of a call Tactiq users can say “Hey I’m taking notes on this I will share them with you after” and then use Tactiq to share the transcript with them post-meeting.

How does this drive growth?

In three ways:

  1. Although users are problem aware they are not necessarily solution aware, by having someone on your team vouch for Tactiq and explain its problem solving capabilities not only does it generate awareness of the product, but by having your colleague use it it is one of the strongest forms of social proof.
  2. By having access to an existing transcript through sharing a meeting this clearly demonstrates the value of the product to other potential users and gives them a taste of what using the product could be like.
  3. It provides just enough value for the user to be curious enough to sign up themselves and give the product a go.

2. In App Notification

Premise

The in app notification builds top of funnel awareness of the product as the other meeting participants receive a notification about Tactiq when a user using Tactiq joins a meeting. This means that in every meeting there are new potential users discovering the product.

It also highlights an unique value prop when compared to the meetings tools: that there is no presence of a bot in a meeting often a highly obtrusive and overt distraction.

How it drives growth:

  • By providing a message notification about the use of Tactiq in the meeting it sparks a conversation about Tactiq and hopefully initiates a conversation where the person using it is an advocate and speaks positively of Tactiq and recommends another individual to try it thus driving the virality of the product.
  • Secondly, by having the URL to try Tactiq directly in the meeting chat it creates a simple funnel for users to follow to sign up to the product.

3. Spaces - Team Knowledge Base

Premise

Tactiq Spaces is designed to streamline the knowledge sharing process within teams, ensure no information is lost and everyone in a team has the information they need to execute on their work - all through shared meeting transcripts.

How it works is people can create a unique space for, say their Product Team, and then invite the other members of the Product Team to join this space. Users invited can add meetings to this space as they see fit. This then creates a unique space where the whole Product Team has access to all the meetings and insights as a team. The real power that’s unlocked here is that by sharing meetings with your space your space becomes an integral knowledge base for your team that they can constantly come back to refer to.

Some fascinating use cases we’ve seen already:

  • Missed today’s Product stand up? Don’t worry it’s in the Product Team space and you can use AI to generate insights from the meeting so you’re up to speed.
  • Forgot what you’re supposed to be working on next? Use your Space to quickly search through your previous meeting.
  • Just joined the Product Team? Use AI to generate a summary of the past few meetings in the Product Space so you’re up to speed.

How we believe this will drive growth:

  1. Spaces powers Tactiq’s bottom up approach to growth: By having employees create spaces and then invite their team members who are not using the product to join, Spaces is focused on working it’s way up the chain of command on an org.
  2. Spaces removes a blocker for larger organisations who have multiple teams to seamlessly use the product.
  3. Spaces fosters collaboration with teams and users and further embeds Tactiq into a company’s workflow.

This feature is brand new and we’ve just launched Spaces on Product Hunt today! We would love your feedback and support as we continue to learn and grow on our entrepreneurial journey.

4. Referral for Meeting and AI Credits

Premise

One of Tactiq’s most loved features is the ability to use AI to generate insights from your meeting notes. However users on the free tier receive only 5 AI credits and 10 free meetings per month.

Tactiq has created a simple yet effective way to bring more value to the user for features they actually use and in turn unlock more growth.

How this drives growth:

  • For users who are not ready to upgrade but find value in the product this provides a simple and effective way for them to acquire more value from the product while simultaneously onboarding new users. Essentially transforming users who are not monetised into a channel of acquisition for new potential user
