#001 - The One Question that Made My First Customer Interview Click

My first outreach was to my fiancé's cousin's wife two weeks ago.

She's an engineering recruiter.

Here's what I said:

She seemed stoked! And we scheduled for Monday.

Monday hit. And it came and went... lol

#001 - Text 3

We re-scheduled for the next day, but that came and went with no connection.

I got so down about this. It seems so small, but it felt huge at the time.

I decided if it wasn't a priority for her, it wasn't for her. And I let it go.

Then yesterday, 7 days later, she texted me to set something up:

We finally got on a call and I talked with my first person about the jobs board of sorts that I'm currently calling, "remote dev jobs"

The convo started okay, but nothing felt like it really clicked.

Here's the "boring, nothing special's happening" notes:

Then, in the last 7 minutes of the call, I asked,

I currently have two roads to go down. Say I have to pick one…

1/ Organized board by causes
2/ Detailed company profiles

Which has more value to you at COMPANY?

And I could feel the energy change.

She LOVED #2. And just started blabbing like crazy.

Here, look:

#001 - Notes 2

We had talked about it previously, but for some reason, that question really connected with her.

Maybe it was the simplicity? (Two options. Pick only one.)

Then, to my delight, she remembered a problem that had come up at work that day...

They wanted a video made about their dev interns becoming full-time, but no one could do it.

I said, "I could do it for you guys."

#001 - Notes 2

She was super excited.

She asked me to send her a few videos I had made in the past. And then she'd ask her Head of HR tomorrow (today) if they'd want me to make it.

Here's the follow up email I sent.

And here's the example videos I gave her: Video 1 & Video 2

And that's where I'm at!

Emails out... and I'm waiting for a response. I'll share what's happened in the next update.

Highly recommend "The Mom Test" for knowing what questions will yield useful insights :)

Also, good post, we need more posts on IH where people give concrete examples of how they conducted interviews.
