15 industries that DALL-E 2 is already disrupting (opportunities for indie hackers)

One of the problems with new technology is that initially, we still don't know what it's useful for. The founders who are the first to figure this out have a major competitive advantage.

For example, Copy.ai was one of the first to figure out that you can use OpenAI GPT-3 for generating marketing copy. They've made $40k/mo in under 4 months, all bootstrapped.

GPT-3 startups with good use cases are still making and raising a lot of money. This startup writes emails for you and they've raised $2.6 million.

More examples: There are tens of different "generate text using AI" products on AppSumo with hundreds of sales. 99% of them are bootstrapped.

My theory is that the same thing will happen with people who figure out the best use-cases for DALLE-2 (and its competitors like Stable Diffusion and Midjourney).

I've spent the last 2 weeks researching this and discovered 15 industries that DALL-E 2 (and its competitors) have the potential (and are already) to disrupt. Each of them contains potentially million-dollar product ideas, so pay attention :)

Let's get started.

1. Stock photos

OpenAI's DALL-E 2 might may mean we never need stock photos again. I decided to put this claim to the test and do some research.

AI stock photo directories have already started to appear: StockAI by Danny Postma is one of them. It already started getting traction and received close to 90,000 visitors during its first month.

AI Search Engines: These are websites which don't advertise themselves as stock photos directories, but as AI image search engines. OpenArt and Lexica are the top 2. And they've been growing like mad. Just take a look at Lexica's SimilarWeb page:

lexica

And OpenArt:

openart

These sites show no signs of slowing down.

Bye-bye, human stock photo actors: This Reddit post can give you an idea of how close we're to making stock photography featuring humans. This stock-like photo was made entirely with AI:

2. Graphics novels

This person created a graphic novel which ended up on the Amazon's Best Seller list:

graphics novel ai

This novel was also entirely generated with MidJourney, a DALLE-2 competitor:

Persisting characters: One of the problems of using AI text-to-image tools is that you can't "persist" the images so you create different pictures with a same image. This is changing, however.

Here's another example of a graphics novel made with AI.

3. Children's books

Some people have managed to make children's books in 2 hours with text-to-image AI. Yes, this includes research, image generation and layout design. Here are the results:

img

4. Game characters and graphics

We can easily imagine how DALL-E 2/StableDiffusion/MidJourney will disrupt this industry. Here, a person is playing with an Unreal Engine integration where players can create content in-game:

img

DALL-E 2 also has the potential to create variations from popular game characters, fix game textures and so on.

5. E-commerce product ideas

Would you buy this bottle?

img

Let's say you're selling bottles. With text-to-image AI, you can potentially create variations of different bottle designs and gauge interest before making them a reality.

6. Newsjacking

In case you're not familiar, newsjacking is integrating your business with a trending event or a breaking news story.

Let's say you're selling rifles (not the best thing to be selling, but stay with me). You wake up one day and learn that everyone is talking about Lord of the Rings. You want to attract some attention by making Gandalf an action character holding a rifle in his hand (wild, no?). With AI, this can take seconds to make (this quirkly picture of Gandalf got over 798 votes on Reddit):

img

Pretty neat, no?

7. Logo designs

Some people have already used DALL-E 2 successfully to make logos. Here are some of the results:

img

The nice thing is that you can iterate an unlimited number of times before you find what you like.

8. Marketing (avoiding creative fatigue)

One of the main problems with images is that people get bored watching them. With text-to-image AI tools like DALL-E 2, you can potentially create unlimited amount of relevant images.

Let's say you're in charge of promoting Oktoberfest. You could hire a bunch of designers/graphics artists or pull out DALL-E 2/StableDiffusion/Midjourney and come up with something like this:

img

9. Tattos (yes, tattoos)

What are tattoos in essence? They're interesting drawings that represent a piece/concept you care about. Text-to-image AI tools are PERFECT for creating these things. Here's an actual tattoo designed with MidJourney:

img

10. Sketching

Tech like StableDiffusion allows you to upload a sketch and get a full-fledged picture in return. This is what I mean:

img

This can be really useful for parents, who want to turn their children's sketches into work-of-art. You could literally draw an owl with some circles:

img

Sketching has a lot of use-cases, including clothing design, which we'll explore next.

11. Clothing designs

Wanna make a cool piece of drawing? Just draw a rough sketch and feed it into Stable Diffusion:

img

I can imagine brands doing this for quickly testing a clothing line, gauging feedback and then making it into a real product.

12. Photo shooting (and editing)

On September 21 2022, DALL-E 2 started to allow users to upload faces.

To give you an idea of what it can do, here's an image of the original (the first picture) + the rest of the images DALL-E 2 generated:

img

Sure, it's still "beta" but I can imagine this having use-cases for photo shooting and editing. For example, you could generate pictures for your Instagram profile and/or your LinkedIn:

img

13. Interior design

InteriorAI is a product where you upload a photo of your current room. It then creates ideas of different arrangements/styles you can use to change your interior. They've launched and had 10,000 visitors in September, according to SimilarWeb.

Image.computer is another product that helps you generate your next interior design idea:

img

They too just got started and had close to 14k visitors in September.

14. Content writing

Some publications already started using text-to-image to generate featured images for their publications:

img

We can just image this trend will continues. The reason: A lot of writers want to "enhance" their text with images.

15. Getting people interested in a topic

I wanted to end this post with a use-case that's a bit...unusual.

Here's an AI-generated picture of a guy taking selfie during the battle of Omaha Beach, 1944:

img

While doing my research, I've noticed people wanting to use AI to re-imagine the past, or pair the past with current trends.

I just wonder if this will have an impact of history over the long-run. Will people become more interested to learn about the Battle of Omaha Beach and World War II as a result of seeing fascinating, AI-generated selfies?

Text-to-AI is amazing at combining something people are interested in (say selfies) and something else they don't know about (say a history event).

Let's say you want to get more people who like animals interested in CyberPunk. Here's a cool image that might get people interested:

img

The opportunities are here

DALL-E 2 recently became available to everyone. According to OpenAI, they're is already generating over 2 million images per day. That figure is likely to increase exponentially very soon. Both for DALL-E 2 and its competitors (Stable Diffusion and Midjourney).

I can imagine that there will be a lot of indie hackers creating products around these industries. We'll see sophisticate sketch creators, logo makers and clothing design tools, all 100% automated with AI.

DALL-E 2 (and Stable Diffusion/Midjourney) have the potential to disrupt much more industries than GPT-3 in my opinion.

  2. 3

I think one of the player that's going to also take a big hit is Fiverr. Small tasks like "make my logo" etc. can very easily be replaced by A.I

I used to get $5 logos from there, now I do it directly on DALL-E.
Basic Customer Service? Can also be replaced (I'm currently working on it)
    Product description & ads? Same!

Any kind of small gig that don't require deep knowledge can be automated in a way or another by A.I

  3. 2

Creativity as we know it is ending.

Difficulty to zero. Scarcity to zero. A culture-wide proliferation of creation.

The act of making excellent work will no longer require having skill, but simply having taste.

    Creation as curation.

The possibilities on the other side of this inflection are hard to imagine, but they're coming.

Very exciting time to be an artist.

    1. 1

      Building skill and slowly
Becoming excellent at something is most rewarding part of creativity - losing that I feel would not be a good thing.

      1. 1

You can always practice and improve on whatever skill you want. We'll never lose that. It's just the market value of that skill may well go to zero.

The optimistic take is that there will be NEW skills to practice and become excellent at on the side. They are likely to be AI assisted, but still. All new creative sandbox.

  4. 2

If someone is interested in exploring Stable Diffusion more, I am building simple to use UIs for just that at https://getimg.ai/.

You can try text-to-image, image-to-image, or inpainting/outpainting for free there.

    1. 1

Very interesting. Actually you can cover many of those cases using this tool.

  5. 2

Any thoughts about AI and the film industry. Do you think AI will ever remove the need for video editors/directors/actors etc?

    1. 1

Meta's Make-A-Video makeavideo.studio is a gem for the content creator. Most of the time they don't find the stock video they are looking for, now they can use this to generate videos and explain things better.

    2. 1

Yes. Just carry this tech forward a few generations... why not?

From a single prompt, a brand new film scripted, "shot," edited, rendered and streamed to your device on the fly...

Or more likely, no prompt needed. Just refresh your Netflix home screen for an unending curation of never before seen films, optimized for your exact tastes.

  6. 2

Thanks for sharing apart from Instagram photo creation posts, this is the first time I have came to know various implementation of Dall-E

  7. 2

Can you guys imagine next AI levels what they are able to do? There is a list of things that I think it will be able:

    • create music
    • create video
    • create 3d objects
    • create metaverse virtual worlds
    • create games
    • delivery robots
    • self-driving cars
    • robots cleaning (toilets etc.)
    • programming (websites etc.)
    • surgery robots

Please let me know about your ideas

  8. 2

How would you go about making one of these?

    1. 1

@jkbl mentioned in one of previous comments https://getimg.ai - very nice and free to use ai editor

  9. 2

I would say that a "meta" job-to-be-done that DALL-E 2 would solve is: "How do I make my text more interesting?"

  10. 2

Wow, this is a pretty comprehensive post. Thanks!

  11. 1

Very good content. To get great results with stable diffusion models, you need to know how to write a good prompt. This article will give you an idea of what I am talking about: https://promptengineer.medium.com/mastering-the-art-of-midjourney-tips-for-generating-high-quality-images-26f45c23beec

Shameless plug for my company, we generate tweet threads, highlight clips, blog posts, and more from technical content using GPT-3 and other algorithms. It's been really interesting to see how people take a talk they give and turn it into other types of content this way.

    http://contenda.co/

  13. 1

Just saw this article. I've also jumped on the bandwagon with https://postparrot.xyz

There's just so much potential, it's hard not to want to build something!

  14. 1

    As always, excellent stuff

  15. 1

It was amazing content. Thank you for it!

  16. 1

We also started using DALLE-2 to generate images for our blog articles a lot lately, which is pretty neat considering you can generate images for any kind of topic you need.

  17. 1

Thanks for sharing this. As a software engineer, I have always struggled to get quick but decent designs. I'm wondering if this may be applied to create UIs in the future.

  18. 1

    Insightful. Thank you.

  19. 1

I have access to DALL-E, it's extremly underwhelming for commercial usage.

It sounds amazing on news articles and posts like this one because of cherry picking.

Too much hype. Only good for fun projects, barely anything commercial. GPT-3 is far more disruptive.

Try it out yourself and the magic wears off within minutes.

    1. 2

I kind of agree with you. After some hard work, I kind of regret it. Rather than being a downstream user, I would rather be a shovel seller. Looking at my website, it kind of disappointed me

    2. 2

Hm I disagree. There are use-cases, just they're much less obvious. And these algos will get better over time so there will be less cherry-picking.

    3. 1

The technology is still early. Stable Diffusion & Midjourney for example produce stellar results for graphic novel use cases.

Microsoft has just announced an app with Dalle built-in.

Keep in mind that Dalle1 and Dalle2 are only a year apart. The improvements were massive.

      1. 0

I think people are missing the point. The images that DALL-E generates are amazing. No doubt about that.

However, when you try to use it commercially, you want more than "Draw a sketch of an airplane as an oil paitning". You want control.

Every single time you run a prompt, you will get a different results. Even if the prompt is 100% identical.

Ironically your example of a graphic novel is not a trivial one, and if you don't believe me, try generating the same character through two different prompts.

  20. 1

Would it be cool, If I make this as a video, based on the information you have supported me with?

  21. 1

Interior.ai is really cool. Peter Levels really has a knack of making good products

  22. 1

Great post with fascinating insights and examples @zerotousers !
One of the traps that I think many Indie Hackers will be (and already are) falling into, is to create apps that are just a front-end to the API.
This is the riskiest of business models, because if the app is simply a form that then applies the AI model without any added value/process, then one day the model will simply overtake the app. I don't need the "logo generator" app if all it does is add the word "logo" in front of the request and call the general "image generator" API.
In fact, such an app would be at much risk when the "image generator" model (and underlying company) is good enough that it can make (and sell) the logos on its own, without the middleman.
So I think AI tools need to add value beyond the models they use. For instance, in our field, we are so far the only AI video editor that does non-trivial work to build and edit the video. If we only applied an out-of-the-box model (e.g. like the apps that simply add subtitles to your video) we would be at risk.

    1. 2

How much did it cost to train your video edit model? I have heard that stable diffusion cost was around $500K

    2. 1

This is useful. i have used it on my website. https://boardsriding.com/

You know why human faces are currently so badly made by dall-e and its competitors? Same thing when it comes to sports and athletes...
