3 Key Learnings from the $150 Productize Yourself Course By Brett Williams of DesignJoy

Hello, fellow Indie Hackers!

I recently took the $150 Productise Yourself Course by @brettfromdj from DesignJoy and here are the 3 key takeaways that I found absolutely worth sharing.

1. Defining your Packages

Ideally, you should have 2 to 3 choices to give to your end customers, and it is recommended that each package should have defined features, one can show about 5 to 8 features in order to keep things simple and differentiate each package

2. How much should you charge?

Start low and gradually increase the price. Provide 100x the value of what you charge. (you get it right? Under promise, over deliver). For professionals providing product design services start with $2000 to $2500 a month and then gradually increase.

3. Finding your First Clients

Having a solid Top of the Funnel is of utmost importance, do not confuse having a weak top of the funnel with the business model.
Few recommendations on channels:

  • Product Hunt: Having a solid product hunt launch strategy
  • Communities: IndieHacker, Slack, Twitter, Facebook groups, Subreddits, etc
  • Build in public: Sharing numbers, revenue milestones, etc
  • Landing page inspiration websites: SaaS landing pages types
  • Micro resources such as UI kits, resources around the domain your work in
  • Job boards: Look for jobs hiring with similar skills
  • Other options: Paid ads on Facebook, YouTube, etc

Note: I have assumed that you've already done the business and product research and finalized the services you want to productize

I bought the course, and as a Freelance Website and Product designer I think this guy is a blatant scammer.

    1. 2

      Why do you think that?

    2. 2

I used to think like that until I started my own business similar to DesignJoy called BubbleWrap(BubbleWrap.design).

Honestly, a lot of what he says in the course makes sense to me, curious to know your thoughts on the same.

  2. 2

What would you advice to charge for a virtual assistant productized service?

    1. 1

Generally, half of what it costs your customer to have a virtual assistant.

We can get into details if you can elaborate more on the service. Pricing depends on multiple factors like who's your target audience, their geography, your value prop, etc etc.

Do you think his tips and ideas could be applied on Development as well?
As a Ruby on Rails developer I created RapidRails UI as a product. It is selling ok and there is a need for it within rails community.

This lead me to provide the same products but custom to each client and startups. Convert and productize a design (figma-sketch) to solid UI Component on top of TailwindCSS that works well with Rails application.

Do you think my services would benefit from his course?
    Thanks!

Should work, provided you set the expectations right.

Take a look at Design Dash, the dude designs and codes in Figma.

I'm interested to know about the community around the product on discord, do you enjoy it? Is it helpful? Do you benefit more from his course more than the community?

  5. 1

Thank you for sharing this! I've been wanting to try his course but haven't been able to right now (laid off in Oct 23). Been thinking about going full-time freelance as a way to pay the bills and was curious how the subscription model works. THANKS AGAIN!
