Growing gSweets 📈 – Nov 16, 2020

This post originally appeared on our Substack. Subscribe for more growth tips.

Hey everyone, we took a week off from the newsletter but it’s good to be back.

The top-level numbers:

  • Starting users: 80
  • Ending users: 95

For about 4 days, over the last two weeks, we had a bug in gSweets that caused shortcuts not to work. We had to pause growth initiatives for a few days. We experienced the downside of building on top of another platform; Google Docs had changed their code and shortcuts stopped working. It’s back up and running now and with it, we’ll be blogging, posting on forums and continuing to reach out 1:1.

Over the last two weeks, most user growth is attributable to Twitter DMs, PersistIQ emails, and LinkedIn outreach.

We’re looking forward to passing 100 installs later this week 🎉

We’re gearing up for a public launch on ProductHunt. We want to make a great first impression and track user retention. Our short term roadmap includes:

  • Emoji shortcuts
  • GIPHY shortcuts
  • Finalizing gSweets website
  • Capturing user feedback
  • Tracking usage analytics

In order to ship features and bug fixes faster, we’re bringing on a 2nd developer and speaking with a few potential contributors this week, I can’t wait. If you know someone who might be a good fit, feel free to introduce us or leave a comment.

Until next week,
Jer & Christoph

PS: Unrelated to gSweets I watched this awesome video from the founder of Patreon on the important distinction between finishing work, and publishing work – and how this differentiation can improve your output.

I really enjoyed it and thought you would too.

This is awesome! Also, your website design is beautiful.

Question: I'm in the middle of trying (failing) to publish my Google Sheets Addon. I'm really struggling to get through the OATH process. Did this cause you any trouble? Do you have any tips?

Thank you! Not yet but we're not an "add on" we're an extension so I assume we're going through different approval flows.

Congrats! Can you say a bit more about Twitter DMs? Do you search for people tweeting on relevant topics, or reach out to followers, or ?

Hey Brian, I do that (search and DM), but I've also built lists of users who've upvoted or commented on similar products on ProductHunt, and if they have open DMs I send them a preview of our app asking if the concept resonates with them.
