A 30 minute Reddit post brought more traffic than a Product Hunt launch we prepared for 3 weeks

On December 22nd we finally launched our product after months of development and got the 1st place. Obviously our small team of 3 people were extremely happy as we prepared for it for 3 weeks and didn't sleep for 24 hours on the launch day. But, overall the launch brought a bit over 1k site visitors...

Obviously I expected much more from being number 1, but nevertheless having that #1 badge is good for credibility and attracting investors. After that bunch of people started asking how we got #1, so I decided to write an article and post it on Reddit.... I didn't expect much but I woke up to 1.2k site visitors on that day. So yeah, a 30 minute post on Reddit brough more visitors than a PH launch. I didn't track conversion rates to be honest, but I believe they are close.

So if you are launching and want to get the 1st place, I would just advise you to really think if you want to do all that work. If you are only looking for visitors, then you can spend your time and energy on other, more effective things.

Having a community on Reddit is like having a cheat-code

    1. 1

that is a nice way to put it

  2. 2

Reddit is pretty awesome as long as you are genuinely serving the community with something useful they are a pre-made audience.

I do completely agree. I believe the post should be useful and actually provide value for readers

Stories about success seems to bring more traffic then the actual work put into a launch haha. Sort of like all the MRR tweets i see on Twitter.

Is it fine if i add this to The Growth Archive? I basically curate real world marketing examples in my newsletter every week and i think the results between the 2 makes for a great example.

That is what I discovered as well. Stories about success bring more traffic. Sure, add it there!

Thanks, i added it to my site

Will be turning it into thread and distributing across other platforms too.

Interesting! I would have never thought that you would only get so few visitors from the product hunt launch.
But a post like this one on reddit will certainly bring a lot of visitors aswell. :D

Reddit is really super powerful  ! I always luauch there first, in small subs to get the first users and feedback.
then, launch in bigger subs to get traction

    1. 1

it is powerful. Also that is a good strategy to start with small subreddits first.

Reddit seems really under rated 🙌

Reddit is really great, in particular for niche areas/topics! I started a financial/investing newsletter last year, and Reddit, along with its subreddits, it not only helped me gain new subscribers but also enabled me to identify which companies to analyze next, generate fresh ideas, and engage with a vibrant community of like-minded individuals.

    HI Farid,

How did you choose which reddit group to post in?

    1. 1

Of course, best ones were r/saas and r/sideprojects
