Hey everyone!
Does anyone else suffer from this syndrome?
Where every idea you have or the product you're developing right now, just sucks when compared to what others are doing?
When you look at others you only see what is on the tip, not the most likely years of trying and failing that has gotten them to where they are.
I look to others for inspiration, not for comparison.
I like to solve my own problems too, like @volkandkaya - but I also focus on things that I'm seriously interested in.
If it were easy then everyone would be doing it.
Thanks Rosie, its so easy to get lost in all the milestones and MRRs. You're 100% right, that you only see the event, and not the journey that came with it.
100%. There's survivorship bias, so I learn from their processes rather than their ideas themselves (if that makes sense). I think 90% of my own ideas suck but there's maybe a chance that 10% will survive. 😄
Ditto. I love solving my own problem but also something I know isn't a short-term curiosity. Has the idea travelled with you between jobs or over the years? Then maybe you're on the right track!
NVM, most ideas suck at first. Keep moving to better idea. Just read 2 articles from Justin jackson (the cofounder of transistor.fm), you will probably get inspiration:
Business is like surfing: https://justinjackson.ca/surfing
Ideas aren't cheap: https://justinjackson.ca/good-ideas
cheers for the material! will take a look at those
That makes sense. I guess the best thing to do is just finish this idea, test it, learn from your failures and move onto the next one!
Just keep trying!! Everybody's ideas suck. Especially at the start.
It's almost a paradox— the key at the start is to pursue ideas (even though they may "suck") because the more reps you get (ie: "failures") the more you'll get better at thinking of ideas... Plus you may even surprise yourself and discover your idea didn't "suck" as much as you originally thought :)
Find an audience and problem space.
Then just go and interview people, reach out on email, FB, twitter etc.
Don't spam, make it personal.
Also the tactic I used was to solve a problem for myself and just build it. But that is risky.
We're in a very competitive space and it seems to be working out but it hasn't been an easy path.

It sounds scary but thats the reality, and what needs to be done!
