Any alternatives to Google Analytics?

👋 I'm working on a new project (https://annotate.tv) and I'm at the point that I want to add some analytics service. Usually I use Google Analytics, but I wanted to know if anyone is using something else and would recommend.

Thanks!

      Wow this market is stuffed!

    2. 4

+1 for plausible. Its perfectly minimal and simple to use. They continually add features and they've all been great since I started using it almost a year ago.

    3. 3

      This is 🔥 Thanks!

    4. 2

thanks for recommending and supporting Plausible!

    5. 2

      Nice work, thank you!

    6. 1

I built these for my static sites http://adi.tilde.institute/cbl, they're WIP tho.

    7. 1

Awesome list. Wish there's a bookmark feature on IH to archive this for future ref!

    8. 1

      Wow! That's a nice list!

    9. 1

You could add also my tool to the list: userTrack 😊

      1. 2

Done. Keep up the good work!

  2. 6

I switch from GA to https://usefathom.com about 2 months ago and really love it!

Bonus-points @JackEllis24 is an IH and doing great work!

      Thanks so much Michael :)

For a self hosted opensource alternative I suggest you take a look at Matomo (old Piwik).
It’s fast, real-time, has a nice API and it’s free.

    1. 2

We run the free version of Matomo for all our assets and love the control we get over the data. It seems a lot easier to use too. I had someone try and setup sales funnel goals in both Google Analytics an Matomo and we found it a lot easier in Matomo

  4. 4

True Indie Hackers hand roll their own bowl of spaghetti analytics system out of CSV files and javascript snippets.

    1. 2

      😂that's true

  5. 4

I compiled a list of privacy-oriented alternatives to GA as I had the same need.

I included the info of it being open source + what gets you the cheapest plan.

Btw I used Fathom (good option), but switched to Plausible (I saved a lot!).

    1. 1

That's a nice, short list. So you chose Plausible over Fathom because it was cheaper? Were there any major differences in terms of features?

PS: You can also take a look over my tool (self-hosted) https://www.usertrack.net

      1. 1
        1. European business, has to follow EU laws, data in EU.
        2. Open Source.
        3. Cheaper for me.

I think Fathom might be a bit ahead in terms of the service (like handling big sites etc.), they also added uptime monitoring for free. However, I would rather support open source and EU business (I am European).

  6. 3

I've been using PostHog (https://posthog.com), open-source, self-hosted and they have auto-capture of events.

P.S with self-hosted you can get away with an annoying cookie notice (but you do need a cookie policy)

    1. 1

I am exploring using posthog at work. The documentation looks pretty solid and the deployment options are great

    2. 1

Cool, thanks! I'll check it out.

  7. 3

I would highly highly recommend Fathom! They were the first to the scene for ethical analytics, very lightweight for the page load, and allows you to showcase your stats directly to your visitors as part of a more "Open" start-up! https://usefathom.com/ref/ZVU0EF (Here is my link, it is affiliate). I 100% stand behind their product! Other good mention would be Plausible or SimpleAnalytics! Cheers and stop giving Google your data! #nomorewalledgardens

  8. 3

https://www.usertrack.net if you need more than basic visitor stats.

  9. 2

I like to connect everything to Google Data Studios. Much easier to use than GA.

  10. 2

Your page looks nice Matias! Did you build it from scratch or used some pagebuilder?

    1. 2

thanks! I made it from scratch 😄

      1. 2

Great, keep up the good work!

  11. 2

You can try this one https://metrica.yandex.com/about
my best feature is web-visor , you can see every user doing on your web site

  12. 2

    What about Momently?

For me, I cannot afford any more monthly fees. What do you guys suggest for faster analytics integration that's free or super affordable?

  13. 2

I haven't used it personally yet but I am looking into using mixpanel.com and segment.io as other people I know have used them successfully and happily

    1. 3

if you want a mixpanel alternative check out splitbee.io

      1. 1

I've tried splitbee a few months ago because I loved the UI/UX but I couldn't send any events. I didn't see a token or something when I did the setup. I guess I did something wrong?

        1. 1

          Hey!
You should try it again :)
You don't need a token for the sign up - just add the script and you are ready to go - we automatically order your traffic without need of an key!

Event tracking is also supported. Let me know if you need any help

          1. 1

            Gotcha. Will do. Thanks!

  14. 2

    I'm working on one more: https://beampipe.io .

I'm offering a free tier at the moment so would be delighted if anyone wants to try it out and give me some feedback.

    1. 1

      Hi Alex,

looks nice! I included Beampipe in my list of Google Analytics alternatives.

You are the only one with hosted free tier on my list which is awesome!

      1. 1

        That's much appreciated. Thanks you!

    1. 2

Yeah, I saw a few. But I wanted to know the experience of someone using one of these alternatives. Have you used one other than GA?

      1. 1

Gotcha. I haven't gotten to the point of needing anything yet.

        1. 2

I think I'll try Plausible. Looks nice. Thanks!

          1. 1

looking forward to hearing what you think about Plausible, Matias!

            1. 2

thanks! I integrated it yesterday and so far so good :)

              1. 1

that's great to hear Matias! enjoy Plausible!

                1. 2

thanks! Great job by the way 😄

                  1. 1

thank you! and good luck on your new project!

  16. 1

I've been using Nibspace (https://nibspace.com/) - lightweight, privacy-friendly website analytics

  17. 1

@matiastucci Any reason why you aren't interesting in GA this time?

  18. 1

https://matomo.org/ aka Piwik seems to be interesting, because of their approach - they give us 100% ownership of collected data. Also it isn't running on client side like Google Analytics (which can be easily blocked with uBlock or stuff like that), but on server side.

I think it's dedicated for mature businesses, even if their pricing is fine for small projects.

  19. 1

I recently came across of this one on HN: https://umami.is
I still have the tab open from a few days ago. It's open source and it looks a lot friendlier than GA does. However, because it's brand new, you can't be for sure it will still be supported in 10 years.

  20. 1

Oh boy ur inviting a lot of advertising with this post. Ok so video annotation, responsiveness and load time is always going to be important, something light weight and doesn't make a ton of hidden API calls like GAnalytics will probably be better.

Event tracking is probably more important to you than an aggregate tracker like GAnalytics, b/c ur making an interactive system, not a blog or marketing software. Something like a mixpanel, but that's probably too expensive if you don't have a huge budget.

Honestly, the cheapest and most lightweight solution would be to implement your own event tracking.

So get a spreadsheet out and log your top 5-10 events "writing notes", "playing video", "video stopped", "note duration", etc. cache these events and then batch update them. Then have a few queries on your backend that you can look at for analysis and put that in a second row with some description in a 3rd row. You can also do the basic GAnalytics stuff like "page views" and etc.

This way you spend no money, can code a little bit more (yayy!!) and you're forced to think more about the user flow through implementing your own event tracking. Also page load time and responsiveness won't suffer b/c there won't be another service running background API calls and A/B tests. The other thing is that 44% of user data in GAnalytics is lost due to ad-blocking, so it's safe to assume that you're looking at corrupt data through that service.

    1. 1

thanks for the answer! yeah, one of the things I don't like about GA is that the data is not 100% accurate. I'm seeing a lot of visits from a china traffic bot and most of the real users have ad block installed. I'll think about writing my own but I would prefer using a service already built. Thanks!

      1. 2

        I get it, good luck

  21. 1

Interesting, why not GA? What are you looking for in your next analytics platform?

  22. 1

Another vote for https://plausible.io/! I'm a happy user for several months now and couldn't be happier. The product is really solid and they keep adding new features all the time. I also like the privacy first approach of the founders.

    1. 1

thanks for the kind words Vladimir!

I'm sure IHs will share the best analytics alternatives.

At https://versoly.com/ we have analytics included in our website builder that comes with templates and a blogging CMS.

    1. 1

Hey, thanks for answering. I have built my site already . Thanks though, looks nice!

Can you host matomo with static sites on Netlify?

    2. 1

thanks! I think they don't support MongoDB though :(
