Can a Blog be the Launchpad for Your SaaS Business?

A few days ago I stumbled across an offer on flippa [Link at the end].

Some facts:

  • A 1.5y old blog
  • The quality of the content is average
  • About 570 posts and about 550k words
  • Profit margin 99%
  • Revenue per month (since Nov 21) $476
  • Expenses for hosting and domain $2/mo
  • Av. engagement duration 3:44 min
  • Unique visits Jan 2022: 357
  • Unique visits Apr 2022: 5,302 (14.8X)
  • 42 Authority Score at Semrush
  • 3.6k backlinks
  • Revenue shares: Sponsored posts approx. 96%, Adsense approx. 4%.

This blog just starts to take off

I knew how hard it is to make some money with Adsense, but the revenue from sponsored posts blew my mind. You get ready to publish content and you get paid. Of course, you need to mix it with your own content, but have a look a the quality of the content of this blog. I don´t want to criticize or make it bad, but this content is average at best. This means, that anyone, even a weak writer, can produce such content and build up a blog, that generates a decent amount of income.

And now think about, what you as an IH could do with such a blog - and keep in mind the future development.

A blog could be the launchpad for your software business.

A blog can provide you ...

  • traffic to get eyeballs on your software
  • traffic to build an email list
  • domain authority to rank on Google
  • income to support you
  • links as barter for backlinks from other websites
    and probably more.

I´ve been struggling through this whole online business thing now for some years. I had lots of failures and setbacks, but slowly I can build up some income I can rely on (about 1-3k/m). It´s hard, but I love it. And an example like this blog encourages me to keep on going.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments. I would love to hear from you.

Cheers, Peter

P.S. I started my own blog on finmods.com a few months ago. It´s about startups, financial models, and such stuff. We will see, where it goes.

This is the mentioned offer on flippa: https://flippa.com/11195115-1-5-year-old-content-based-blog-with-a-diverse-range-of-topics-mainly-attorney-related-making-476-per-month-from-sponsored-posts-and-adsense-revenue

Awesome post, Peter! I wasn't aware of flippa. I think you are on to something, in regards to leveraging a Blog purchase such as that as a launchpad for your SaaS. The risk could come if the readers of that blog are not in your target market.

Already on the hunt for a machine learning blog? Could be a platform for the interviews you plan to do.

Yes, a blog is a growth engine. It establishes you as a leader in your industry and draws visitors to your website. It's great for generating organic growth as well as keeping current customers engaged. A website blog is worth the effort.

Hey Gavriela, I see you are a freelance writer. Can you share your experience with AI writing tools? I discovered them 2 months ago and after a steep learning curve, I get pretty good results now.

Hi Peter, nice to hear from you. The only AI writing tool I use is Grammarly (paid version). I've explored some of the new AI writing tools that write articles for you, but I just can't jump on board with that process. I know Neil Patel talks about them quite a lot and he's excited about how they speed up the process. But for me...no thanks. Which AI tools are you using? And how are they helping you?

Grammarly is great, I use it too. Referring to AI writing tools: Jasper is great but pricy. I also tested 2 or 3 others, but they are terrible and I couldn´t get any good results. Then I discovered wordhero and I love this tool. For certain kinds of content, it's perfect for me. I use it mostly for SEO articles for my blog. Tip: there is an unlimited lifetime deal on AppSumo right now. Highly recommended.

Contentyze is an AI powered tool for generating content. Best of all, it's also developed by fellow Indie Hacker @pchojecki.

Looks interesting. Haven´t tried it yet. It also runs on GPT-3 like many/all other AI writers, which is good. But, I already saw, that there are massive differences between AI writing tools, even if they all use GPT-3. The first impression from the video is good, however, I think one has to test and find the tool that fits best.

I haven't checked out wordhero. And thanks for the tip on AppSumo. I'm going to go over there now to see what's going on.
