Content Marketing Breakdown: How Zerodha is Driving 220k+ Organic Traffic Every Month

Zerodha is currently the biggest stockbroker in India.

With a great product, they also have a solid content strategy that gets:

  • 220k+ search traffic/ month
  • 72k+ backlinks from 1.41k domains

Breaking down the content strategy of Zerodha 👇

1/ Content organization →

Zerodha has strategically structured the URLs to organize 11 pillar pages and 760+ blog posts on different topics.

This helps the users and the crawlers to understand the structure and purpose of important pages.

2. Content in Regional language →

Not only in English, but Zerodha has also focused on creating content in Hindi.

The benefits?

  • Less competition
  • Lack of Hindi content on financial education from credible sources
  • Long-tail-keywords
  • Comparatively easy to rank higher

regional content

3. Building pillar pages →

The goal of pillar page & the topic cluster is to build topical authority & rank higher on competitive, broad keywords.

But the thing is: Not all pillar pages have to be long-form content.

In fact, pillar pages of Zerodha Varsity are the opposite.

Instead of creating a giant page on a specific topic, they have added a short description of each topic cluster.

We call this resource pillar page.

For example, the pillar page on ‘Introduction to stock markets’ gets 3.9k visits/ month & backlinks from 44 different domains.

Here's what a typical pillar page looks like:

4. Internal linking →

Internal linking is one of the most underrated ways to boost website performance.

And Zerodha Varsity has done a great job.

For example, breadcrumbs help to add internal links between the pillar page and topic clusters.

This way, the link juice will transfer the high authority pages to the low authority ones.

To take it to the next level, every content cluster is connected with each other.

Here’s how:

Key Takeaways →

  • 1/ For a content-heavy website, organizing content and web pages by using subfolders is good for users and SEO as well.

  • 2/ Instead of randomly publishing blog posts, try to categorize your blog content into broad topics or modules.

  • 3/ Topic clusters & pillar page concepts are a great place to start with.

To get better results, focus on strategic internal linking for each pillar page.

  • 4/ You don’t always have to compete on English language-based content.

Look for opportunities in regional content as well.

That's all, folks.

Your post is very insightful! Let me ask you a few questions:

What are some low-effort ways to get some traction with SEO?
What are some good tools for accelerating the creation of content?
What can be done with a few people to produce regular content.

    1. 1

      Glad you liked the info.

1/ low-effort ways are all about fixing the SEO base. Recently, I am working with an eCom site and that has the issues like not-optimized meta data, random heading structure, duplicate category pages, etc. By improving the basics, we saw a good jump in the results.

So, for I always prefer auditing the site and working on the basics - Technical issues, improving Blog UX, on-page, etc.

2/ Currently, we work with content writing agencies- not using much of AI tools for the creation. So can't comment on this.

3/ For a smaller content team, I'd suggest to have someone who can do the keyword/+audience research and create content briefs in advance. Start publishing once you already have content ready for the next 1-2 weeks.

Very insightful post! I have few questions.

    • What are some of the low effort ways to get some traction with SEO.
    • What are some good tools to speed up the process of content creation.
    • How can a small team of people produce regular content.
    1. 2

For the 3rd question: Define clear tasks for every people in the team. For example, someone should only create briefs, other one will work on writing, etc.
My recommendation will be stay away from 'one man doing all the job' approach.

    2. 2

We work with content writing agencies for a long time. So they take care of all the creation.
From our end, we make sure to create detailed briefs along with brand guideline.
P.S I mostly stay away from AI tools to create content as these tools can't produce original content (from my experience).

    3. 2

For every project I almost start with looking at the basics such as internal linking structure, thin content, duplicate content issues, orphan pages, and also on page optimization of product/category pages.

If you find issues like this on the site, fixing this will give you a boost.

Nice one. How long does it take to make this kind of breakdown?

    1. 1

Well, it totally depends. Usually I study competitors or sites from different industries to understand their strategy.
So thought of turning it into a short article.
