Hi all,
I was looking for a mega thread or something similar on IH where people could let other Indie Hackers know about their submission on Hacker News or their launch on Product Hunt but I haven't found anything like that.
People seem to go with a single post on IH to announce when they're launching. These posts are good as they allow the founder to explain the launch in details and provide great insights to the IH community but the post loses visibility among other non-launch related posts.
My idea is to create one or more groups, depending on the number of people interested, where you can announce your upcoming launches and get the support of other members to help give you the initial boost 🚀
Obviously it requires everyone to give as much as they take, that is, take the time to upvote and engage with other people's submissions, and not just benefit from the group for your own launches. I'm finding people on IH quite benevolent and supportive so I'm confident that can work.
What do you think of the idea?
I believe WhatsApp would be the easiest way to organise the groups. I'd be interested in your suggestions on the following:
In case many people are interested, what should be the maximum number of members in each group? There should be enough people in the group to effectively support each other's submissions and launches, and not as many as getting a WhatsApp notification every 5 minutes.
How people should be assigned to the groups? I'm thinking by country in order to match the time zones and in case there are not enough people from a given country, I will include them in another group, so that all the groups will have the same number of members.
If interested, you can fill in the following form and I will start organizing the groups, and share with everyone a link to their respective group.

Take care
Great idea for bootstrapping some community. I imagine this will work better for PH than HN for the reasons already discussed, but HN also requires fewer votes to hit the front page. Not sure how fancy you want to get but a few ideas:
Any time I see a launch post like this on HN where it's obvious that someone has asked people to vote/comment (and it's always really obvious) it leads to a lot of negative comments from HN users. Maybe it's still worth it but I'm not sure.
I agree but what usually happens is that the founders will ask a group of friends or family members to upvote their submission "en masse" which can be easily flagged by HN, as a lot of these accounts would have been created recently, for the occasion.
I believe you need 51 karma points on HN to have your upvote counted anyway. It used to be like that, not sure if that's still the case. And while you can still click to upvote with a new account, these upvotes are not taken into account and are quickly flagged.
My idea of having WhatsApp group(s) of Indie Hackers is that a majority of us on IH have been either lurking or active on HN or PH for some time, so our accounts would be less suspicious.
A few more considerations to avoid being flagged would be to not access the submission directly via a link, but browse the website until you find the submission in question, and once you found it, engage with it in a meaningful way, that is, not just praise it blindly, criticize the product, offer suggestions for improvement, etc..

😂
Maybe a simple daily email with a list of people launching on PH? You could create a landing page for people to subscribe and then they just email you if theyre doing a launch. (A bit like Jack's Flight Club)
I'd be happy enough to subscribe and give fellow IH an upvote when I see theyre launching.
Yeah I think supporting each other on launches would be very helpful. I think that some telegram groups like makerlog are really supportive with this stuff.
I think for a PH launch you would want a wide spread of countries so that you would get upvotes at different times in the day. Maybe not segment groups by countries.
It takes ~ a month to build a product, so a highly doubt there would be a launch every 5 minutes. Think you would be safe with a fairly large group of people since launches are infrequent per individual.
