Does your startup have a blog?

Hi there!

We are Getscreen.me - software for remote access from a browser. A couple of months ago we decided to set up our own blog to gather more organic traffic https://blog.getscreen.me/. We write about general topics related to remote access, working from home, and helpful software. So far there aren't many articles, it's more of an experiment. Do you have a blog on your website and is it producing results?

    If you are just getting started I highly suggest to re-host your blog under

    getscreen.me/blog

    as opposed to

    blog.getscreen.me

    There are many reasons why, which I won't go into detail now but trust me it's the best practice - or you can Google it and spend 15-30 minutes of rabbit holin down SEO :P

    Hell... yes.

    I'll go one step further: it's stupid NOT to have a blog.

    My first software company started as a 2-page website: homepage and blog page. I grew an email list to 3000 people before launch. When I launched, it was profitable from the very first day.

    The first year I blogged 4 days a week for the entire year. Google loved it, and the traffic grew on the site. By the time I sold the company, it was getting over one million visitors a year in large part because of the blog.

    I'm doing the exact same process now for my new company, and it's working. It's a bit harder than it was 10yrs ago, but I know it to be a proven way to get visibility.

    We're a few months past launch, and I'm getting our blog off the ground now. I started with unscalable, high-impact marketing tactics to get the ball rolling first.

    Content marketing is great, but it's a long-term effort and won't provide significant results for months. If you're getting into blogging for your site, make sure to also focus on SEO, social media, and email list building. These things all gel together and create a ton of value for your company over time.

    Content marketing is so common now, I would would be surprised if a company wasn't at least trying it.

    Putting it all on your own blog is hard, I would start by going to where there are users aka Reddit, Quora, Twitter etc.

    It takes time to generate the kind of traction numbers but its definitely worth it in the mid/long run! especially if you write authentically and build a following that genuinely wants to read your content

    I think it's more of building a cycle regarding content marketing.

    By sharing your articles to other platforms that might interest your target audience, those readers will also read or share links to your other articles to gather more traffic.

    Depending on the article itself for SEO or organic traffic might take a bit of time.

    I found it helpful to repost them in Medium in which the articles got a lot more views. That helped me to grow audience on other social media.

    If you are doing it for SEO, have you done keyword research and built the articles around them?

    I've had some success with my eCom store that I'm trying to replicate for my SaaS. The basic principal is answer a question people are searching for and be better than the competition and you should naturally start to climb the rankings.

    BoldDesk - started drafting articles around 2 to 3 per week. Initially, no traffic then after 3 months we are getting impressions and slowly organic traffic is increasing.

    You must write the content consistently and after some days you will get some decent traffic.

    I think the question is not about to have or not to have a blog, but about the ever-shortening attention span of most users/readers. I mean not only the psychological side of the issue of short attention span triggered by technology, social media, etc., but also the fact that there are too many of those blogs, they are too frequent, and there is too much fluff in them.

    I personally do not have the patience to sift through the fluff of long blogs. If you have something important to say, just do it in a few short succinct paragraphs, and that's it. And it will increase the probability of getting more attention of more people.

    From that perspective, I think traditional blogs are dying, or rather diverging into a fork of short succinct posts on one side and super-long blogs, kind of online articles/essays on the other side. Each type works better for different purposes, and different audiences. I am certainly on the short side of this fork :-) And you?

      Yes, you are largely right, blogging should be useful, not just a set of clichés. But at the same time, a blog is the only affordable and free way to get organic traffic for a company.

        Agreed. It is similar to twitting (which is a type of blogging). So much platitude is out there just to get followers/generate traffic. And surprisingly, it does work. I guess you have to stay on a sliver line between some good content and some fluff to build your audience :-)

    Yes, Blogging has done wonders for me. Even at engagespot.co, with few good quality content, we have closed deals worth $10K ARR without any sales team. Don't just write about your product. Write articles that add value to users from your target market. And, it will take time!

    Mainly so I can write 'How to' guides as well as stuff which aligns with the goal of our ideal users, which is our case in mostly CV, interview and career advice. But it's only just getting started at the moment.

    I just created a blog for my app over this weekend, primarily for the purposes of:

    1. Driving traffic to my app/website
    2. Providing an outlet for me to vent app stuff

    My goal is to post a few times a week. We'll see how it goes.

    Having a blog and investing in content marketing is a great way to drive traffic to your landing page. Traffic will grow/compound with time too.

    But it takes time, and doesn't feel as intuitive as coding because the results are not deterministic. Besides, no one knows how Google really works.

    We started investing in SEO a few months back and things are paying off now. Our blog post on ux discussion guides is now ranking in the top 5 for some keywords on Google.

    I'd say to be good at SEO you need to be able to do the following:

    • write good and useful content
    • focus on long tail keywords (use ahrefs or something similar to find them)
    • share your posts on as many relevant channels as possible. Get others to do the same too

    Last thing this requires is patience... it took us months to get to where we are. If anything I regret not having started earlier.

    Our blog provides us with a small but steady stream of leads, I'd say so far the leads it's generated have been worth about €3k in revenue - which isn't too bad considering we have only written 7 posts! It also helped that one of the posts hit the front page of HN and has a huge amount of backlinks across the web now.

    We tend to just write about topics we're interested in, plus company news and product updates. This coming quarter we're going to start writing more posts that are specific to our product offering, and I suspect that will be even more beneficial. We just didn't want to write content marketing, we want to write about stuff that interests us first, rather than stuff that is purely to drive traffic.
