Driving traffic to Landing Page

We built a landing page for our idea and started writing blog posts about it on the same domain.

What is next? How do we drive the traffic to it?

We do not want to run any ads anywhere for traffic. Shall we wait for SEO and blog posts to send organic traffic to our landing page? I am ok with writing articles but looks like this is going to take a longer time.

How did you drive traffic to your landing page excluding paid ads? Are there any other ways? How did you validate your idea?

Backlinks are the key to expediting the ranking

Now that you have a good landing page it is time to get backlinks!

Backlinks are the most important metric for Google’s ranking factor.

Many startups find getting backlinks hard as this is the one SEO part that is out of their control.

To begin with getting them, I recommend signing up to all startup directories such as betalist, startup ranking, Crunchbase, Launching Next, Indie hackers… It is pretty easy and helps get high DR backlinks

    1. 2

I agree backlinks are helpful but they are no longer the most important metric for Google's ranking.

You are referring to the old algorithm where Google crawled the web and connected it like a spider web of backlinks. Too many users tried to 'game' this and put backlinks everywhere, even on other sites they owned, so naturally Google changed this to remain a good source for reputable search.

Backlinks play a role but now Google uses ML to look for natural language sentences in your entire website, blog, headings and I believe even attachments on your site now, to see if you are relevant to surface for user groups that would most like to see your content. The same way YouTube works essentially. It's a lot more advanced and complex these days. Make sure your entire website is well-written and has good use of relevant keywords in natural language sentences. Don't just add keywords everywhere otherwise the UX will suck anyhow.

    2. 1

I did not know that backlinks were important for Google's ranking factor. Thanks!

That's a great suggestion for startups to gain visibility and improve their online presence. I'm particularly interested in Crunchbase. Can you please guide me on how to effectively use Crunchbase for a startup?

  2. 3

If you have a blog / newsletter - this could be a good channel of distribution.
If you have followers on twitter / linkedin - this could be another great channel of distribution.

In general, I believe it's best to offer free material (knowledge like blogs posts) that will in turn drive traffic to your product / landing page.

Obviously you can do advertisement as well, but my philosophy is one man startup with near 0$ bootstrapping, so ads are out of the equation for me. But it might be good for you.

    1. 1

In my case, I do not have an email list, or an existing social media following. I am now planning to promote it in various forums, groups and submit to listing platforms as everybody is suggesting.

  3. 2

Just curious why are you trying to avoid paying for ads? With Facebook ads you can literally run an ad for a $1 a day.

If you want free traffic then you need to provide in a lot of time creating free content such as video tutorials, blog posts, posting / helping people on Facebook groups, calling people , emailing, interviewing in podcasts in your niche, contact other leaders in community and offer them a affiliate marking deal (obviously this can be setup later). Those some ideas I came up with off the top of my head. Maybe even tik Tok depending on your niche.

Unfortunately blog posts will by take the longest to get results / traffic because there are a ton competition on articles.

Think about most people don’t mind writing a blog post or hiring a writer even now use chat got to write it for them.

Creating a video , doing an interview calling people are less competitive because more people are scared to do this. Not easy putting yourself out there.

I’m chat gpt can probably give you some good ideas as well.

    Unfortunately

    Paid = save time
Feee = put in the time

    1. 2

My understanding is consistent with yours. A small amount of payment can bring returns in a simpler way, which allows developers who do not understand how to market their products to test them more quickly. The initial investment may not be as expected, but you should still use this method to learn some marketing knowledge.

      1. 1

Couldnt agree more. Marketing is erxtremely important and hoping / waiting your SEO to bring in traffic is not a safe bet. I like paying for ads because you have more control.

    2. 2

Paid ads don't save time, till you are a seasoned marketer yourself. One should get help with paid ads if you have that kind of money to spare(you get nothing in $1). Running ads is viable when you have revenue from your business.

      1. 1

well i never said you were going to get great results with $1 a day. I just was trying to say it not hard to get started to see how it goes. Plus facebook ads are not that hard. Just look at a youtube video. Especially the photo ads. But hey maybe that's just my opinion.

basically was I trying to say it doesn't hurt to try out different methods and try to get traffic from different areas.

    1. Every article write you want to write, write it for some other business you can get Backlink from and use them on your website in the next article.
    2. Talk to people, tell them what you are building, exploit your social media connections. Be creative on social when you post.
    3. Reach out to people and post in collaboration, request them to share and talk about your business.
    4. Collect emails on your website through a form/pop up and engage through email campaigns, remember to share content that adds value for them, don’t do just for the sake of it
    5. Start a podcast, just do it, don’t hold back. Write a script, refine a bit, take help of generative AI, Get a friend and talk about whatever you are building. Get it shared through your friend and professional circle.

There is more but these points can get you started. Keep reminding yourself(if needed) to remain committed.
    Cheers,
    Anurag

    1. 1

      Hi Anurag!

Regarding the first point, do you have any advice on how to write for other businesses? Is it as simple as sending them a message proposing a guest post?

      1. 1

Yes, it's that simple. Also, you can get names/links of the websites/businesses that allow guest posts. Find a generic list here: https://bloggerspassion.com/guest-posting-sites-list/
Drill it down to suit your business/product

I found this topic today, and perhaps it'll be beneficial to your goals: https://userbooster.co/

I'm in the same situation, and was hoping to see some new suggestions. I actually have two landing pages active right now:

The second one is a smaller project due to me having trouble finding my target audience for ZitaSync. I tried asking for feedback on relevant subreddits, and got a bunch of hostile aggressive "it must be open-source and free" types on my back. I actually tried reddit ads using their free signup credit, and hit the same hostility.

I still think there is a market for the product, but clearly what I thought was the "ideal customer" clearly is not. I'm having trouble finding different online communities who would be a better fit...

Getting traffic for idea validation is hard when you have no existing audience on social media or an email list (that are the right fit for the idea), so it's going to take some time. Also, "enter your email to join the waitlist" is a pretty weak offer, and one that's become overused. I'm reluctant to give my email to anyone unless there's a good reason...

I think the most effective way to get early traffic at low cost, is to join online communities where your "target audience" hang out, and talk with them. You can find out what their challenges are, get feedback, and drop a link to your landing page when it's relevant.

Tidyrise seems geared toward small businesses. You might find this list useful:
    https://www.indiehackers.com/post/i-curated-a-list-of-50-places-to-promote-your-startup-b09e68131f

    1. 1

This has inadvertently turned into an example of how getting the audience right matters. Posting links to my landing pages here has resulted in an influx of visits from Indie Hackers. However, the Indie Hackers community is a poor match, so no signups.

    2. 1

thanks for sharing the list 👍. It is very helpful.

  7. 2

We're having the same situation. We've written multiple blogs but don't see any traffic coming from them yet. Would love to learn more about backlinks though!

  8. 2

I'm roughly in the same boat. My site has been a VueJS single page app. The blog-writing experience has been ATROCIOUS, I've had to write blogs in HTML and it has sucked. So I'm transferring my site to a Nuxt equivalent so that I can easily write blogs now and make the entire SEO experience easier. Except I'm a moron because my site has been up for over a year, but I've barely done anything with it and haven't transferred it to Nuxt earlier than this. My marketing has often been more manual, 1:1 conversations on forum sites. Ah well, gotta learn from the beginning.

For your SEO questions, I would check Google Search Console and maybe consider a subscription to something like Aherfs. Target long tail phrases and good keywords.

Common Ahrefs advice that I've received is this:

    • Find low competition keywords with decent traffic.
    • Write blogs with one keyword at a time being focused on. Put the keyword in your <meta> title and H1 on the page.
    • Checkout your competitions keywords if you want.
    • Consider building "multiple landing pages" on your site over time.
    • Do a few different levels of SEO. Some SEO could be transactional, where people are immediately ready to buy, and other SEO could be purely informational, where you build up your domain reputation and just help people.

Go to Aherfs docsite and find their chart about different SEO types.

Hope that helps a little. I'm not a pro and am only just now acting on this advice, but I've been consuming a lot of research on this for over a year.

  9. 1

I have found some cost-effective success using cold email campaigns.

My tool of choice is Hunter (I am not allowed to post links yet but it is the tool with the orange wolf icon)

I probably am spending around $150 a month on subscriptions but am driving a couple hundred clicks and a few responses a month

  10. 1

To drive traffic to your landing page without relying on paid ads, you can leverage social media platforms, engage with relevant communities and forums, collaborate with influencers, optimize your website for search engines, and consider guest blogging on industry websites to reach a wider audience. Additionally, validating your idea can be done by conducting market research, surveys, gathering feedback from potential customers, and monitoring user engagement and conversion rates on your landing page.

  11. 1

    I'll keep it simple

Use social media platforms to drive traffic.

SEO takes a minimum of 3 months to start taking effect.

Since you're already on IH, start interacting on the platform. Give value by providing valuable answers and sharing your experiences.

While doing these, you can also tell people about your landing page and input a link only when it's related to your answer.

For example, if your landing page sells your web design services, you can answer questions related to web design or roast other web pages (if asked for).

While answering and roasting, you can talk about your web design services and move the prospect to the landing page.

    I hope this helps.

    1. 1

      thank you for the tips

  12. 1

    i'll keep the answer simple.

Basically what you need to do is promote your page to various sources of traffic more the sources, more the traffic.

now don't just type Hey visit our page! it should be something valuable that can make people click on your link.

you can drive traffic from Social media, microblogging, blog comments, QnA, forum.

Apart from that there's SEO, but for SEO you need to have topical authority for your page. i.e., you should have detailed yet clear cut answers for all the sub topics of that topic in the form of blogs and all these pages should be interconnected properly.

    1. 1

      thank you for your suggestions

  13. 1

Once you have built a landing page for your idea and started writing blog posts on the same domain, the next step to drive traffic is to focus on organic methods. While waiting for SEO and blog posts to generate organic traffic, consider other strategies to complement your efforts. These can include leveraging social media platforms to share your blog posts, engaging with relevant online communities and forums to spread awareness, reaching out to influencers or industry experts for partnerships or collaborations, implementing email marketing campaigns to target your audience, and optimizing your website for better search engine rankings. Additionally, validating your idea can be done through market research, customer surveys, conducting interviews, and gathering feedback from your target audience to gauge interest, demand, and potential opportunities for improvement. It's essential to continually assess and refine your strategies based on the results and feedback you receive to maximize the success of driving traffic and validating your idea.

  14. 1

You need to syndicate your blog posts elsewhere. Here, reddit, medium, Twitter, Facebook, hackernews, dev.to, etc. Wherever makes sense.

Experiment with short and long form (eg here on IH long form may get more engagement rather than just posting a link), tweetstorms, different titles on different platforms (hackernews will crucify you for clickbait), gallery's on insta, etc.

Basically take the content you've written and retool it for other platforms, always linking back to the original.

On a technical note, make sure your onsite SEO is up to scratch, and be sure to add canonical tags. Also best to ping google with the original before spreading duplicate content.

  15. 1

Some things I haven't really seen mentioned yet that I did for my SaaS I launched on product hunt today named Poket Dev (Unlimited Software Development Subscription):

    • medium blog articles. I released 2 articles along with my product hunt launch today and those articles already have over 160 reads. I have high value content with subtle branding.
    • reddit. Find communities on reddit that won't ban you for advertising. Give them high value content as well.
  16. 1

For some quick wins, utilize large communities with common interests to drive traffic.

Post on relevant reddit subreddits - but make sure to provide value. Post in Facebook, whatsapp, and slack groups. List your website on launch sites like Product Hunt, Betapage, launchlist, etc.

    Good luck!

    1. 1

thanks for suggesting all possible places to submit the landing page. Really helpful.

  17. 1

SEO honestly should gain you results within 3 - 6 month if done well ( focus on midfunnel content in your blog and thanks me later)

Use PH and even IH to call attention to your product.

SEO will work if done well let me repeat that.

    I wish you well.

  18. 1

Congratulations on building your landing page and writing blog posts! Driving traffic to your page without running ads is indeed possible. While SEO and organic traffic can take time, there are other strategies you can explore. Personally, I use social media platforms to share valuable content, engaged in online communities and forums related to my niche, and collaborated with influencers or partners to reach a wider audience.

  19. 1

Share your blog posts on forums where your potential customers hang out, this way you'll get the traffic and feedback much faster than purely with SEO.

As long as you give instead of asking, people will respond positively on any forum.

  20. 1

If you already validated the idea: Full on content marketing, social media, ads.

If you haven't validated the idea: ads and some content marketing (guest posts or on your own social media).

I wouldn't go full content marketing mode until I know the idea is a good one and sizing up if people actually want it.

  21. 1

May I ask: what's the point of just driving traffic? Do you want just traffic or to validate your idea/sales/subscribers/retention? Can you also share your landing page?

    1. 1

      Thanks for asking :)

Here is my landing page: https://www.tidyrise.com

I would like to drive traffic to build waitlist and validate my idea.
Once I build a considerable number of waitlist users, I would like to talk to them to fine tune the features and add/drop features. This also will help me in getting initial customers.

Please share your feedback on my landing page and idea. Also on my strategy to validate and build it.

      1. 2

Yeah, so as everyone is saying, you can either run ads or "utilize forums, social networks and etc.". Nothing new here. However, utilizing forums and social networks may cost you a huge amount of time. Time is money, so sometimes ads can be a lot cheaper and easier.

Also you can just consider finding 10 - 50 quality targeted potential users by hand and working with them to shape your MVP and to validate your idea.

The problem that I encountered with subscribers is that it's not 2019 anymore.

        1. People seem kinda tired of leaving their emails on every random landing page with "an idea".
        2. Only 1 - 10% of subscribers would probably be genuinely interested to proceed and help you with your product.
        3. It's a lot easier to obtain a subscriber than a genuine user. Subscribers may not like (and convert) once they'll see your working product.

So personally I wouldn't depend on subscribers too much at this stage. It's cool to check if people are "clicking" on your idea, but the idea is nothing without a good execution.

That's just my opinion, so I hope you'll find something useful here :)

        1. 1

          Love your honest opinion.
What I learned is, the more I talk and interact, I get more honest opinions than the obvious regular ones. Thanks a lot for sharing your opinion.

  22. 1

There are many ways to drive traffic to your landing page, depending on your goals, budget/effort, and audience.

Here are some of the most common and effective methods:

    • Use organic social media. You can share your landing page on your social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. You can also create engaging posts, stories, videos, or live streams that showcase the benefits of your landing page offer and encourage people to click through.

    • Partner with other brands. You can collaborate with other businesses or influencers that have a similar or complementary audience to yours and cross-promote each other's landing pages. You can also offer discounts, giveaways, or referrals to incentivize people to visit your landing page.

    • Engage in groups, forums, and Q&A sites. You can join online communities where your target audience hangs out and participate in discussions, answer questions, or provide value. You can also subtly mention your landing page offer and link to it when appropriate. Don't spam or be overly promotional.

    • Contribute to other publications, blogs, webinars, and podcasts. You can establish yourself as an authority in your niche and reach a wider audience by creating valuable content for other platforms. You can also include a link to your landing page in your bio or as a call to action at the end of your content

    Move forward; [email protected]

      Answer generated by ChatGPT? Cool

I'm really tired of that basic AI written as well don't get the point. For example now I know @deluar001 knows jack shit about this topic, but still he pretends he does.

I started to block anyone that is using AI written confent for the numbers only.

Our company, Logomakerr.ai (https://logomakerr.ai/), an AI-powered logo design maker platform that generates logos in under 5 minutes, drive traffic to our landing page through a combination of paid ads, blog posts, and other effective methods.

These include leveraging social media engagement by sharing captivating content and using relevant hashtags, collaborating with influencers to promote our landing page, utilizing email marketing to build a subscriber list and send compelling newsletters with exclusive offers, and actively engaging in online communities and forums while subtly mentioning our landing page as a valuable resource.

Additionally, we engage in guest posting on industry-related websites, collaborate with design platforms, showcase our creations on visual media with optimized descriptions and tags, and participate in online events and webinars to share our expertise and promote our landing page as a valuable resource.

Continuously tracking and analyzing performance allows us to optimize our strategies for maximum results.

  24. 1

You try writing elsewhere in the short-term. Highjacking websites that already have high traffic (medium, growth hackers, substack)

    1. 1

Yes, I started on medium now. Will start on other platforms as well with backlinks to my landing page. Now the new problem is finding what to write on each platform without repeating the same topic on all ;)

  25. 1

We started writing our blog last year with the intention of driving SEO traffic, and just now (after 1 year) Google has begun displaying our articles in search results.

Now we are ready to engage in activities aimed at collecting emails by offering free useful resources.

    1. 1

Happy to hear that your articles started listing on Google searches now.

But isn't 1 year too long for new SaaS? For established, it makes sense.
Did you try any other strategies during this 1 year to drive traffic to your page?

      1. 2

Unfortunately, no. We didn't have enough time and money to test other channels and decided to focus on two things: improving SEO and expanding our content library (which is based on business book ideas).

BUT! We made this decision after testing various product hypotheses and understanding the long-term potential of this product.

        1. 2

Yeah, I wonder if OP is just in the process of testing product hypotheses, if so, I wouldn't go the content marketing route just yet.

I'd rather just spend 50 bucks on ads to validate an idea.

          1. 1

Yeah, absolutely! and at first we validated our idea via FB

  26. 1

Also curious if same domain blog posts help? or medium? or not worth it at all?

    1. 1

Both are needed as per my understanding.

Writing on same domain drives direct traffic to your landing page and shows your authority over your solution.

Writing on other platforms will increase your backlinks and also drives traffic. But more importantly, it improves your domain authority to list higher in Google search results.

  27. 1

I back linked my site as part of a Reddit post. I just wanted to see how many email signups I could get. I got a good spike in traffic and ~80 signups for my mailing list.

If you're looking for a more sustainable way, I'd say SEO.

    1. 1

how do you advertise on reddit without getting posts removed?

      1. 1

The ton of the post was "looking for feedback", instead of "here is my landing page". It's still up today and driving a small amount of traffic. Below is the post I made:

Title: Making an app for POTS

        Post:

Over a year ago, I was diagnosed with POTS. It was so bad that I wasn’t able to leave my apartment without my chest hurting and could hardly walk. It took 4 months of exercising 5 days a week, drinking tons of water every day, and eating lots of salt before I started to feel even a little better. Throughout that time, it was also extremely hard to know if I was actually making improvement. I just had to hope I would get better.

Needless to say, I found this all really disheartening. So, I wanted to do something about it. I've been working on an app to help people with POTS track their habits and symptoms so they can see what causes them to have good days and bad days. The app is called POTSie: {link to app}. I'm still building the MVP, but if people have any feedback on the initial design or what additional features they want, I'd love to hear it.

    Hi @tidyrise 👋

I'm also in a similar situation. My landing page has been live for nearly 5 months now and I've managed to drive ~500 visitors to the site without advertising, and without really trying. The numbers aren't huge but are certainly more than I expected!

My biggest source of traffic actually came from getting the site showcased on Tina which is the CMS I use to power the blog for the site. If your site is using a particular technology, you could always see if they would showcase your site?

The rest of the traffic has been a mix of referrals from Indiehackers, my portfolio website and reaching out to people directly.

I also started blogging from day one but it's a long game, and to date has only brought in about 15 visitors. I've found Byword very helpful for this – it's an AI tool that generates blog posts for you.

    Hope that helps!

    1. 1

Showcase on Tina sounds good. I am trying also building some integrations as a way of bringing traffic https://www.indiehackers.com/post/can-i-just-code-instead-of-doing-marketing-e83efafa2f
