Everything I did to get my first paying customer ๐Ÿฅณ

Analytics since launching the beta

Starting a new SaaS can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. It's exciting to see your vision come to life and the potential for growth and success. But it can also be overwhelming because, in order for your business to succeed, you need customers. And acquiring those first few customers can be a daunting task.

But don't worry, it's not impossible! Inspired by this post, I'm here to share with you how I acquired my first customer for my SaaS, MentionFunnel.

Story

First, let me tell you a little bit about MentionFunnel. It's a tool that helps people find new customers by notifying them whenever their keywords are mentioned on social media. Currently it only supports Reddit, but I plan on adding more platforms such as Twitter, IH and Hacker News in the future.

There are quite a few competitors. Other tools that support a lot more platforms, but are also more expensive (and imo missing in UX and other features). My tool is a more focussed, cheaper version that tries to let you reply to people who mention your keywords without any friction. Others have mentioned that competing on price is generally not great, but until I have actually verified this is something people will pay for, I don't mind having a lower price than others.

Exact post I used for Reddit

I chose to focus on posting on Reddit and IH as my typical customer will probably be hanging out there, looking for ways to find their first customers. I'm the same and I've actually written about how to find your first customers on Reddit here, which is the same process that I followed (I also list each subreddit and the results here). As for IH, I simply found posts where I thought I could plug my product w/o coming off as spammy (since it was always somehow related, e.g. it solves a problem someone was complaining about). This resulted in around 70 people joining my waiting list, but I managed to somehow lose 20 of those ๐Ÿ˜…

Twitter growth

I also started posting on Twitter, where I have 73 followers (at the time of writing). It started off much lower on like 30 followers and it only resulted in a couple of sign ups, but I still love it and will continue using it. I mainly focussed on posting screenshots of MentionFunnel's features while building them, which people seemed to like.

Example Tweet people seem to like

I decided to go with freemium instead of trials, as my priority is getting more users, which should hopefully result in more feedback and allow me to improve the product. The launch of the beta was last week (30th of November) and since then I honestly did not do that much (except write this post and post on Twitter) since I was busy with my actual job.

I'm honestly super surprised someone actually started paying already, and while I am super happy about it, I somehow feel like I don't deserve it and they will churn immediately. Can't dwell on that though, so my next steps are to just keep on building ๐Ÿ’ช

Congratulations! I have not reached the stage yet where I can start promoting the product but will definitely get there. And will most likely need solutions like the one posted here in the future. Bookmarked.

Congrats Amos, this is a huge accomplishment and also your UI look beeaaaaautiful. I am curious, how many of those free users did really engage a lot but just didn't convert vs. how many signed up and didn't do much?

I am asking cause I am currently working on a tool (I don't have anything to sell, I am just trying to see if this would even be useful) that helps unstuck users that got stuck somewhere in your app and didn't continue (for whatever reasons): https://journey.validate.run

It's basically a low-code way to send the right custom emails at the right time to your users to re-engage them. I have built a makeshift solution for a tool of mine and it's working great so far, not statistically significant enough users though.

Back to your topic, as I said the UI looks beatiful. Is that custom CSS/design? I love the interactive elements that give a preview of what using your app will feel like.

Thanks for the kind words Bengin! I built all the UI myself using Chakra UI.

As for your question, quite a few didn't get past the onboarding, so it's definitely something I have to work on. I was actually thinking of implementing something like your tool for myself, so I'd definitely use it.

        Wow, kudos for that.

I'll keep you in the loop for the tool then :)

Congratulations Amos! It was great reading about your journey.

When did you start with your marketing and promotions? are you planning to launch your tool on any other platform?

      Thanks, Harsh ๐Ÿ˜„

Before I coded anything (related to the app) I created a landing page with a form where users could sign up for the waiting list. Then I started posting on Reddit and IH wherever and whenever I could (wrote more about it here).

Yes, I'm definitely planning on expanding to other platforms as well. Probably I'll start adding IH and Hacker News first (as that should be relatively easy) and then Twitter. Maybe Quora in the future as well, but I've never used it myself, so will have to do some research.

congratulations Amos! Did they converted from free plan to paid plan or directly bought paid plan?

    1. 1

Thanks, @pdyc! They were on the free plan first for a day or 2 (they actually found out about MentionFunnel on here) and contacted me on Twitter asking if I plan on supporting Twitter in the future (I do) and gave me some feedback (including that clicking โ€œupgrade planโ€ gave an error message - oops! ๐Ÿ˜… ). I replied and the next day they DM'd me saying they were going to try out the Starter plan ๐Ÿ˜„
