Guide: Increasing sales with analytics

Hey community!

As we are approaching 100 active websites and building an analytics tool, we are very well positioned to help business owners with optimizing their website conversions, so here it is.

A complete guide to using analytics to increase your conversion and sales!

First of all, you have to think of your website as a funnel. If you are selling ANYTHING on your website, you need to understand this.

Using data to understand consumer behaviour, is key to optimizing conversions.

Just like when you walk in your local store, things are not placed randomly. It is based on research, data and testing.

So lets get into it. Below are some tips to increase your conversions and thinking about your website as a funnel.

Top Sources
Where does your traffic come from? Its important to look at sources in comparison to effort. Say, you are putting in a lot of effort on twitter, which is gaining you 60% of your visitors, but a few linkedin posts are getting 40% of the clicks, its worth it to put more effort into linkedin.

Same with traffic from Google/Search traffic. Are you not getting many visitors from that? That means you can improve SEO.

UTM Parameters
You have to ALWAYS use UTM parameters. For your twitter profile, linkedin profile and every single place you share your link. This allows for data precision. This way, you always know where people are clicking. Did this post, this advertisement or this profile bring in the click.

Scroll Depth
How far do users scroll on your website? This is one of the most important metrics. It allows you to understand where users fall off. It allows you to identify the part of your website, where users "had enough" and decide not to continue.

Loading Time
Understanding loading time, gives you an idea of the experience your visitors have. As you probably know, loading time affects conversions - this has been studied before, but it also allows you to understand if some change you made to the website is affecting loading time.

Devices
Allocate effort into the platforms that users are using. If its a lot of mobile, make sure your mobile experience is flawless.

Organic Traffic
Making sure you understand your organic traffic is huge. This allows you to understand what content is performing well, so you can double down on that type of content. It allows you to identify channels that are performing well.

Top Countries
You may be targeting lets say american users, but somehow a lot of users from Germany are visiting. This may identify a potential market to expand to and focus on.

What Is Clicked
Understanding what users click on, is key. In general, you want the user to click SOMETHING during the visit on your website. You want them to express their interest, clicking further down the funnel. Always have something for each stage of the funnel. You want them to go further and further, convincing them to make the "final" decision.

Combining this with the scroll depth, lets say of 65% - you need to wake up their interest BEFORE that 65%. If your buttons are not converting well, you need to change them up. Sometimes its just a color, other times its a change in the offer. Instead of "book a call" - change it to "What i can do for you" - this might not lead to a booked call, but it takes them one step further down the FUNNEL

Don't just use analytics to see how many visitors you had today. It's so much more than that. Optimizing conversion and in the end sales, is not one thing. It's many small things, that in the end accumulate to one big thing.

Dont have these metrics? Dont worry. We built Websense just for you. Business owners, that are trying to grow.

You will get all of these metrics without any setup or custom events, and its completely FREE.

Hope this gave you some insights as to how to increase your conversions and use analytics to grow.

LarryXea, this is an incredibly valuable guide for anyone looking to leverage analytics for website optimization. Your analogy of treating a website like a retail store, with careful placement and understanding of customer behavior, really resonates. The emphasis on different aspects of data analysis, like source tracking with UTM parameters, scroll depth, and loading times, provides a comprehensive approach to understanding user engagement. The point about adapting strategies based on device usage is particularly crucial in today's mobile-first world. Additionally, the suggestion to alter website elements before the average scroll depth threshold to increase engagement is a practical and actionable tip. It's impressive how Websense offers these analytics tools for free, making it accessible for businesses of all sizes. Thanks for sharing such a thorough and insightful guide
