How I went from an idea to first paid user in just 4 days

With the power of no-code and TikTok, I managed to go from idea to first customer in just four days.

I also generated five figures in revenue in the first 30 days!

Not here to flaunt any revenue numbers, but my hope is to inspire. I truly believe that this is the golden age of building startups for indie hackers. Building a product has never been easier with no-code and now also with AI. And distribution is also cheaper and faster than ever with TikTok/Reels.

Here's the story.

Background

I was a Product Manager earlier in my career and been creating content in the tech/AI space for 3 years.

I have my brother as a business parter and we have 1 employee.

I came up with the idea of a chatgpt prompt generator. Spoke to the team about the idea and they also loved it.

The team spent few hours figuring out the prompt engineering behind prompts and came up with our first version of the model.
We were shockingly happy with the results.

Tech Stack

It took us roughly 1 day to put together the product with nocode:

  • My brother's girlfriend came up the logo design using Canva
  • Front-end was built using Carrd
  • Used PickAxe for the backend
  • MemberSpace to manage subscriptions
  • And Tella for the first demo video

Pricing Model

It was a trial for a couple of days and ten $3.99 after. Credit card was required to sign-up.

This is to make sure we get real signal for the interest in the product.

Launch Day

We finalized everything by like 7pm in my brother's bedroom on Friday. We were thinking if we should wait until Monday or just ship on a Friday night lol
It turns out we're not patient enough so decided to launch it!

We decided to launch the ugliest looking product we've ever built on a Friday night.

We thought, if there's any signal, we will quickly move away from Carrd and build something better next week.

We created a new tiktok account and just posted a few videos. And I posted about the app on my IG story as well.

And that was it.

My story had a couple of thousand views and the new tiktok account video got a few thousand views as well.

A few thousand views turn into a near hundred website visitors which turned into a 10-15 sign-ups over the weekend.

Aftermath

After the initial signal, we migrated the app from no-code to a low-code model for robustness and more feature development.

Kept posting same tiktoks over and over again and the account somehow got 2k+ followers with one video going mega viral. Literally product demos and people still follow the account lol (not complaining though). We grew to 5-fig revenue in the first 30 days. I also posted it on my personal account (tons of followers so definitely helped to crack 5-fig revenue).

But this is the highlight reel, let's also look at the reality.

Our growth has slowed down since the initial hype. We've also experienced higher churn similar to most AI tools or GPT wrapper. We've got lots to learn but I am happy how we can ship fast and know how to market an app on social media.

Should probably do a Product Hunt launch soon.

The lesson is what you've heard a million times — just ship fast, if there's value, people will tell you.

Note: this was easier for us because I have 3 years of experience growing TikTok accounts including Zapier's.

The app I am referring to is called prompt-genie.com

congratulations, but i have a problem, does tiktok allow your put your site url?

    1. 1

No, there's no linking in TikTok but it doesn't matter

It is always easier for user to just search for website. Direct search turns out to be a good proxy measure for attribution

  2. 3

Do you think it was the TikTok video that gained you the subscribers?

    1. 2

All my marketing is organic tiktok/ig (the specific app account + my own channel)
Plus once a video goes viral, other creators talk about it so more views

  3. 2

    Great insight, thanks!

    Thanks for sharing

this is very inspiring! could you share more how to use tiktok on validating ideas without products, especially when the tiktok account is also new.

    1. 1

I did a presentation on that a product conference, I will try to find my deck

But basically using different hooks and hashtags you can play with the value proposition and audience variables.

And content engagement is then a proxy signal to compare the tests to each other

Wow, that's really awesome to hear! I'm so glad you shared your story with me, even I have started working on my idea and soon will be able to launch

looks like you ordered ads from many influencers as well. As you have those videos on your website. But great result anyway!

    1. 1

I'm exploring working with influencers for our Shopify apps and SaaS platform too - any recommendations where to find them?

  8. 2

    Inspired story. Thank you

Hi Kushank! this is very inspiring, I'll use some of your insights for monetizing my saas, in which 've been working the past 5 months building it. Cheers!

I am also in the space of content development for all social media platforms, just launched a productized service for my agency and launching tomorrow on Product Hunt! ( https://www.producthunt.com/products/writejoy-2 ) ! Hope we can interact and learn from each other, Congrats on the amazing growth.

    1. 1

      congrats on the launch!
For service stuff, I'd recommend just using trending audios and creating 10s snappy videos of your process and results.

But yea feel free to DM on Twitter

Should do wonders for leads :)

I would love it if you could share the tiktok account (I need to understand the flow of creating video).

Already subscribed to the newsletter btw.

This is awesome. I’m struggling to validate my ideas and this article helps a lot. I’ve built apps but can’t seem to find product market fit.

    1. 1

Yea! You can even think about it as video first, hook is just a value prop, create a whole bunch of videos and see what hook (value prop) resonates better with the audience

  15. 2

This is great man! I'm currently helping founders validate their ideas and get their first customers in no time, without wasting time and money. This kind of "hacks" are so helpful to prove that you just need to get started.

    1. 1

Yes! I can talk about social media for hours! but literally without building a product, you can use TikTok to validate the problem you're solving and who you're solving for

  16. 1

So inspirational! I would love to know your secrets to make a TikTok go viral.

  17. 1

How did you decide on the pricing model for your product?

  18. 1

    Cool! Thanks for sharing.

  19. 1

Kushank, i'm curing. How do you quantify "good traction" ? ( when shipping fast and moving from project to project ). Is it with the number of sign-ups ? Paid users ?

If you have insights about how to test a market, i'm quite keen to hear them !

    1. 2

Number of website visits -> show me that the problem is big enough to drive traffic
Number of sign-ups and conversions is just the quality of solution and website optimization, etc

  20. 1

    Can you link your TikTok?

    1. 1

no! I just tell people to go to this website.
I use second or third person point of view sometimes

  21. 1

That’s amazing! When you say you kept on posting the same videos over and over, would you the delete the previous videos or just keep posting the same videos on the same page ?

  22. 1

Shipping fast is one of the best way to test your ideas! I made 7 product hunt launches in 14 days, even half of them were shut down I made my tests and got a following very quickly
