How we got 285+ clients in 48 hours from Product Hunt

We launched our project M1-project.com on Product Hunt on September 7, 2023. I want to share its results :)

PH stats

Our results:

I will satisfy your curiosity immediately:

  • Website visitors: 1,500
  • Mail collected: 285+
  • At the moment we are working with 20 clients (average bill $75).

Since we are in the beta stage, we contact and service all clients manually. To achieve such results, we needed to have a successful launch on Product Hunt.

Product Hunt launch statistics:

What does launching on Product Hunt do for you?

The main logic of working with Product Hunt is that all launches are shown in random order on the main page for 4 hours and collect votes. After 4 hours, projects are ranked by the number of votes.

Roughly speaking: if in 4 hours you have collected the most votes, then your project will be at the very top of the Product Hunt main page.

And as we know, Product Hunt’s traffic is huge (5.4 million per month). Also, if your project makes it into the top 10, Product Hunt includes you in its mailing list of 500,000 subscribers.

How can you get the same results on Product Hunt?

I won’t write that your project should be interesting to people — that’s already clear.

If we are talking about numbers, then 150 votes in the first 4 hours will most likely give you a place in the top 3.

For example, here is the rating on the day of our launch (we are not in the top 3):

  • 1st place: 265
  • 2nd place: 224
  • 3rd place: 125

If you manage to take the top place, it will be difficult to knock you off. Because Product Hunt visitors will see you and vote. And the best part is they'll visit your website and leave feedback.

How did we get 7th place on Product Hunt?

There are 50-100 launches per day on Product Hunt and it is quite difficult to rank towards the top.

Making a great product and hoping it will sell itself is not enough. External support is needed.

For example, check out my previous launch:

https://www.producthunt.com/posts/m1-chat-com

Only 3 votes! (By the way, even then I received about 30 emails in 15 days.)

What did we do to support the launch?

1) Audience with Product Hunt.

We made a teaser on Product Hunt to accumulate an audience there in advance:

https://help.producthunt.com/en/articles/6684724-how-do-i-create-a-teaser-for-my-launch

We found everyone on Product Hunt who was interested in similar products and told them about ours. We asked people to subscribe to our teaser and support us at launch. (We received about 20 subscriptions doing this.)

2) We informed friends and acquaintances about the launch and asked for support.

We had a list of 20 people and reached out to them.

3) Facebook: We made announcements in "hunter" groups.

4) Reddit: We made posts in thematic subreddits.

5) Paid advertising with influencers.

I think it was this channel that provided the majority of our votes, but I had to pay for it.

Total spent $1,000:

All this allowed us to take 7th place and receive about 300 applications, which are still ongoing.

This is a big step forward for us, since by communicating with customers and making sales manually, we receive valuable feedback and understand what our product should really be like.

Even though the preparation for the launch took 2 weeks, it was worth it.

Additional tips, my conclusions after launch:

  1. We received 1,500+ site visitors. I regret that I did not put pixels on Facebook and other advertising networks to gather an audience.

  2. We indicated a direct link to our launch everywhere, I think it would be more reasonable to indicate links through a redirect and track the number of clicks on each (especially important for influencers).

  3. If you have an MVP, as we did, then I advise you to think through the way of communication with the client in advance. Our mistake was that after leaving mail, the letter did not automatically go to the client. (At first we sent it manually.) Because of this, there were delays from application to first contact.

  4. One last piece of advice is to respond to comments on Product Hunt quickly and honestly. 2 out of 3 clients who expressed doubts about the benefits of our product, after my detailed answers, got in touch and started working with us. By the way, it is comments like this that are excellent grounds for improving the product and landing page.

Conclusion:

If you want to know more about our project, visit M1-Project.com.

If the material was useful to you, give feedback in the comments.

Good luck with your launch!

These are some great statistics! Thanks for sharing. Curious, did you launch on anything else apart from Producthunt like Betalist?

    1. 1

Yes, we did launches on 8 resources. But there aren't a lot of traffic. Betalist gave us maybe couple emails.
PH has 30 times more traffic than betalist.

  2. 2

Thank you for sharing details and your insights, @igor13. This definitely helps!
I just wanted to get your thoughts on whether you think it's worth spending $1000?

    1. 1

Frankly speaking I don't know, because we did't check how many clicks every influencer's post brought. It was our mistake, next time will do better :)

But definitely we got traffic and support from influencers. So I recommend use this opportunity.

  3. 2

    Thanks for the detailed article.

If you guys are just starting and need to acquire customer with low cost I would recommend you guys to check this video by kahtryn minshew the founder of The Muse about : Kathryn Minshew, Acquiring Your First Users Out of Thin Air, The Lean Startup Conference 2013

In that video she goes trough step by step on how to get first initial customer with less to none cost.

The main idea in that video is if you want to get your first initial customer you need to go and sell them, either sell your product to blogger, influencers or customer you need to do the work to force people to introduce your product.

She talked about how to approach bloggers, media etc and how to email them and how to approach customers and then request them to promote for you.

I also recommend you to read this article about : Acquiring Your First Users Out of Thin Air

Interesting. But it’s like 9 years ago, do you think its still applicable?

  5. 1

Love seeing the process of it all, very insightful!

  6. 1

    awesome writeup!

As someone who’s done a few product hunt launches, these are some great and insightful tips.

I found a lot of this helpful for my launches as well.

  7. 1

very insightful!! we will launch on Sep 25th. Still have time to find influencers

  8. 1

Cool! Now the competition looks very strong. In 2020, Plerdy and I were #2 on the list in one day. Just a few days ago, we finished in 12th place.

  9. 1

How do you find the perfect hunters or twitter influencers for your niche?
    Does influencers reply to messages?

  10. 1

Thanks for your insights Igor ! so valuable !
How did you choose and select the influencers to partner with ?

  11. 1

Thanks for your sharing. This is really helpful, because I will launch my product soon.

  12. 1

Thanks for sharing, I seems you product is having an incredible start!

  13. 1

We got #5 on the daily charts by posting on Producthunt, and probably had a total of 600+ users come through, judging by Google Analytics!

  14. 1

Hey Igor, congratulations on the successful launch and the numbers you've received so far. If I could offer some friendly advice, I would remove the customer testimonials for now until you get some real ones that you can proudly show off. It was fairly easy to confirm that the ones on the site right now are AI generated and it's much better to not include them than to have potential customers scared away by them. Best of luck my friend!

    1. 1

      thank you for feedback!

  15. 1

Is there anything you would have done differently?

    1. 1

yes, I wrote this in last paragraph :)

  16. 1

I wonder how much extra traffic comes from bloggers and media who talk about Product Hunt launches. They write articles and share links, and that can bring more visitors.
Did you measure the side effect?

    1. 1

hmmm, no we did't. I even don't know if somebody wrote something about our launch except me.

  17. 1

Very good advice, which will be of great help to my next Launch.

Thank you for your transparency, those numbers look great

    1. 1

you are welcome :) Hope I will be helpful!

  19. 1

Really appreciate for sharing the exact numbers even with AI influencers post costs

This will help to calculate the ROI as well

  20. 1

Good post. Helpful resources. Thank you

    1. 1

      thank you for kind words!

  21. 1

Excellent article, very useful and will be using this for my own product launch. Good luck with your venture.

  22. 1

Your detailed recount of the this journey truly resonated. Launching a product there can be such a rollercoaster, and your strategy was clearly well thought out.

Took a deep dive into M1-project, and the concept of letting AI quickly craft ICPs is truly innovative. It's such a pain point for many founders, and this approach could be a game-changer.

Specially liked the emphasis on both B2B elements like company size and revenue, as well as the detailed buyer persona attributes like hobbies and values. It's this holistic view that can make a huge difference.

Excited to see where you take this!

  23. 1

Thanks a lot, really helpful stuff. How do you get in touch with those influencers and negotiate prices with them?

    1. 1

I private messaged them on Twitter.
Described what we want from them (advertising thread). They named their prices and if it was too expensive for me, I wrote “Can we do it at a discount of $X?”

  24. 1

just come back here to thank you for assisting on my first every product launch https://www.producthunt.com/posts/creative-blog-topic. I got no 18 of the day which for first time I feel good about it.

I follow all the groups and subreddit you listed here and then pushed my link asking for upvote exchanges.

Surprisingly I got over 44 votes and it is amazing.

    Thanks for these tips

    1. 1

Great! I am glad my article helped you :)

      P.S.
      Upvoted your product.

  25. 1

PH is a great platform for launching startups and your Facebook group list is very useful and saved 10s of hours of research.

  26. 1

Crazy good results for Product Hunt. I'd aim to try and turn those mailers into paying customers with a presale.

  27. 1

  28. 1

This is insightful! Thanks for sharing your experience. did you try other platforms like IH or HN or even Reddit?

    1. 1

PH was our main resource. We published everywhere link to our launch. Because our main goal was - gain place in TOP 10 of the day (this gives you a lot of traffic from PH visitors).

  29. 1

That's great! I am saving this post for a future product launch.

Heads up because platforms like ProductHunt help you to get an initial boost. I'd add them to the launch announcement list. However, as soon as it becomes a not-so-new product, these platforms give fewer results.

  30. 1

This is an awesome walkthrough! Did you ever try Hackernews?

    1. 1

yes but didn't get any result maybe we did something wrong...

  31. 1

Are you planing to launch anything in the near future?

  32. 1

Why didn't you do a video ad?
may ask how the conversation with the influencers work
did you start the conversation on Twitter?

    1. 1

Video ad - I don't know, did think about it. Good point!

Yes I just messaged them in direct messages:
"Hello! I would like to know if it's possible to place an ad in your Twitter account?

My team and I have created a project and would like to promote it in the form of a thread. We can pay of course."

      1. 1

Interesting I feel pretty naive, I thought they just promote stuff they find.

  33. 1

These are really helpful insights. Would you consider the work you put into the PH launch worth it for you?

    1. 2

yes, yes and yes! I gained 400 emails till now

  34. 1

I love the design of your landing page! Also the list of places where you made announcements is very useful!

    1. 1

      thanks for kind words! :)

  35. 1

This is a great resource, thank you for sharing. Do you think ProductHunt skew more towards B2C products instead of B2B? Now that you've launched, is there anything you wish you'd done differently?

    1. 1

No, I don't think so. There are 6 million visitors on PH per month, there are a lot of different people.

If I launched again, I would create automate mail campaign after user registration. You need to reach users quickly while they're hot.

  36. 1

Thanks for sharing! Did you work directly with the influencers or did you use a platform/agency to find them? How did you negotiated the price?

    1. 1

      Hi! We worker directly.
I gained 25$ from 2 of them. They like negotiation.

  37. 1

Thank you that was very helpful

  38. 1

    Thanks for sharing

Congratulations on the Successful Launch of M1-Project on ProductHunt! 🚀

First and foremost, I'd like to commend you on the meticulous planning and execution of your launch strategy. The results you've achieved, especially in terms of website visitors and email collection, are a testament to the hard work and dedication you've put into this project.

Your insights into the mechanics of ProductHunt and the strategies you've employed to gain traction are invaluable. It's evident that you've learned from past experiences and have iteratively improved your approach. The way you've leveraged various platforms, from Facebook groups to Reddit threads, and even influencer marketing, paints a clear picture of the multifaceted approach required for a successful launch in today's digital landscape.

One particular takeaway that resonated with me is the importance of customer interaction and feedback. As you rightly pointed out, engaging with potential clients and addressing their concerns not only helps in conversion but also provides invaluable insights for product improvement.

Lastly, your reflections on what could have been done better, such as pixel tracking and automated email responses, show a growth mindset. It's this kind of introspection that sets successful entrepreneurs apart.

Wishing you continued success with M1-Project and looking forward to seeing how it evolves based on the feedback and insights you gather from your growing user base. Keep soaring! 🌟

  40. 1

@igor13 Igor, congrats on your success. How do you measure the effectiveness of your marketing efforts? In other words how many customers came from Reddit, Facebook etc.

    Thanks

    1. 1

unfortunately I don't know. Most of them of course came from PH.

But we attracted users to our PH page from wherever we could. We should have used specific links for each source to track clicks, but we didn't :(

  41. 1

Thank you for providing such helpful advice, especially regarding your transparent information about influencers’ posts and prices.

I will definitely keep these points in mind when I launch Lifetimo on ProductHunt.

  42. 1

Based on your experience, would you work with the influencers again?

    1. 1

yes, but I would create special link for each of them to track statistic

      1. 1

Yes good idea also maybe for all source

  43. 1

Thanks for sharing your tactics! It is super helpful!

    1. 1

I am happy to be helpful :)

That's very helpful for me. It will be of great assistance for my upcoming lunch.

  48. 1

wow that great! we also plan to launch on PH

  49. 1

Amazing insights, thanks for sharing. This should help beginners like myself looking to embark on this journey

  50. 1

Congrats on the successful launch! How long did it take for you to build this momentum on PH?

    1. 1

  51. 1

Thanks for sharing! This was really helpful.

  52. 1

Hey, I just submit a post few minutes before yours in which I asked for these kind of advices.
    Thank you for sharing.
