To put this into context - tiiny.host was receiving ~100 hits a day before this spike.
I've been putting a lot of energy into growing that number recently so there was a WTF moment when I woke up on Thursday morning...
How did this happen?
I went to bed on Wednesday night very calm and woke up on Thursday morning with 100s of messages in Japanese. Turns out all the traffic was from Japan. And with a little help from Google Translate, they were all asking if we could redeliver their parcel at a different time.
I didn't realise that we were a delivery company.
After much investigation, it turns out someone from Taiwan sent 20,000+ spam messages out redirecting users to an Android malware site via tiiny.host.
Moral of the story
Any type of traffic is not good traffic - even if its 1400x your current traffic. Make sure you get it from the right type of users.
Oh and now I've built a hell of a lot of spam detection and protection.
I'm surprised your host didn't cut you off or throttle your BW.
Are you on a shared plan ?
We run on AWS so its child's play traffic really for them.
Oh god! The website looks nice and useful, however. :)
Thanks for your kind words!
But hey, this is a cool site! I may try it sometime. Love how it's just drag and drop right on the homepage.
Thanks alex! What would you use it for?
I think if I just made a simple HTML page that I wanted to show someone. Dropbox used to be good for that but they got rid of the public HTML links. I use Netlify for my static sites now, but if you just want something quick this could be good. I think maybe you're netlify for non-technical users? Not sure how you target those people.
When growing my MVP landing page, I found the same thing. Today, I got good traffic but the conversion rate was very low. The conversion part matters the most.
Converting online doesn't necessarily have to mean selling. Getting an email address, filling out a form, ringing a number is also converting.
Generally though if your landing page / fb ad isn't converting. You're either targeting the wrong audience or have a poor product/market fit.
Its 80% what you're selling and 20% how you're selling it.
I agree. My landing page is intended to collect emails of potential but targeted audience only. I like the way you put it.
A good lesson, thanks for sharing! Curious what are your steps moving forward to solve the traffic and conversion issues?
You're welcome. Still working it out but focusing on targeting more of the kind of actual paying subscribers. Turns out to be freelancers and agencies right now.
That's very interesting... I wonder how you could benefit from something like that. I mean, at the end of the day it doesn't matter where you get the money from, meaning, if its from a japanese or english customer. If they like your product then I guess youre fine... Maybe I dont understand the concept of that android malware site but " there's no such thing as bad publicity."
Wishing you the best!
Thank you! Yeah I was definitely thinking about how to benefit from that, I'm still getting traffic a week later because of that lol but the problem is most the visitors are non technical and tiiny.host is essential a place to host your web files. Perhaps one engineer stumbles upon it...
Yeah i'm sure theres a way. For the record, the link you provided in your post directs us to this post, #inception. I would like to see your creation?
Ah crap no you were right, just updated it. Thanks!
I see now ! My bad , i'm new here :D !
