Hey Indie Hackers,
A few hours ago I launched my side project, InContact, on ProductHunt, and while I’m proud of getting it out there, the first hours were... a fail.
I’ve learned a few lessons —mainly about what I didn’t do quite right. So in this post, I would like to tell you what I did wrong and give you some proactive feedback on what you should do instead.
Additionally, I'll leave here the link for my ProductHunt launch, so you can see how I did it and take what I did right: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/incontact. Also, if you'd like to upvote it, I would really appreciate it!!
Here’s what I messed up:
I didn’t give enough attention to building anticipation or spreading the word beforehand. It’s easy to assume that ProductHunt traffic will carry your launch, but the truth is, that you need to drive people there actively.
Even if you don't have a big online presence, it doesn't matter. Start writing articles on Medium or IndieHackers and posting on Twitter and LinkedIn. Also, in my experience, Reddit doesn't move a lot of traffic to ProductHunt.
While I’ve been a lurker on ProductHunt, I never engaged until launch day. That was a mistake! Building relationships with the community in advance would’ve made a difference in support and visibility.
Spend some time a day (like 30 minutes or so) browsing products, writing comments, upvoting projects, etc. That will build a solid follower base who’ll be the first to upvote your project
In case you didn't know, the first 4 hours are crucial on ProductHunt, so try to exploit them as much as possible.
I didn’t ask friends, colleagues, or users for feedback or support before launch. Ask your friends and colleagues to create a ProductHunt account if they don't have one and upvote and engage with your launch.
Launches start VERY early (in my country, at 4 am). However, if you ask them as a favor to do it a bit early, I'm sure they won't hesitate to do so.
If you’re about to launch, learn from my experience. Give yourself the best shot by engaging your audience early and often.
Inadequate Promotion: If your launch didn’t gain traction, you might not have promoted it enough. Ensure you share your launch on social media, relevant forums, and through email to your network. Engaging with communities that might be interested in your product can also help.
Unclear Value Proposition: If users didn't understand what makes your product unique or valuable, refine your messaging. Make sure your ProductHunt listing clearly communicates the problem your product solves and why it stands out from the competition.
Poor Timing: Launching at an inopportune time can affect visibility. Timing your launch when your target audience is most active on ProductHunt can make a difference.
Lack of Engagement: Not engaging with users who comment or upvote can be a missed opportunity. Actively responding to comments and feedback can help build a community and boost your launch.
Insufficient Preparation: If your landing page or website wasn’t ready, users might have been turned off. Ensure that all aspects of your product, from the website to the user experience, are polished and functional.
Very helpful reminder. You're miles ahead now for your next launch, having experienced first-hand what was missing.
Totally! Goes to show how important it is to try and share with the community
Very insightful, but not to worry slow and steady wins the race! Seeing your dedication to evaluation, you'll get there soon!
Thanks a lot!!
Thank you for the feedback!
I just started on Product Hunt and unfortunately realized that choosing a company username during sign-up was a mistake :(
Why?? I'm about to do the same 😂
You can't contribute on Product Hunt with a company account
Very helpful. I was planning to launch soon so it made me think that I need more prep work. Thanks!
I'm glad you found it helpful!! Don't try to make everything perfect, but promoting your launch like a week or so before launching is crucial
I think I am still sharpening my knife. Because in order to promote it before the launch, I need more audience.
Sure, but don't overcomplicating, specially if this is your first launch for your product
