Hey IH, i'd like to invite you all to an initiative me and few solopreneurs from twitter have started, called BuildInDiscord (BID) - the ultimate motivation to help you work on your startup, and learn/share alot of hacks along the way
You can join here: https://discord.gg/uXF56E3Chr
BID started from an original idea which was inspired by Youtube families/clans. One big call, where everyone can pop in and out of to get help or feedback. The best (and quickest) way to set that up is through discord. And so, we started BuildInDiscord.
The way it works is pretty simple: Clock in, say what you want to get done today, ask questions or request feedback while you're online, report any new findings or learnings, clock out. That's pretty much it!
And for launches, we can all support one another, share advice, feedback on each others launch campaigns before you go forward with it.
We hope you join us on this exciting and first of it's kind community! :)
If you've done BIP on twitter, you'll quickly realise 3 things:
That's because you're ultimately fighting against an algo.
If you don't have twitter blue, just forget about it, you'll find more success by digging for treasure with a spoon
Why is it you "just have to know how to go about it properly"? Running a startup is hard enough as it is, to engage in a helpful community shouldn't required you to become a tweeting expert
Many people on Twitter are posting just for the sake of posting, to get on the algo's good side. And even when they post, it's not actionable, and more often than not it's just motivational quotes which is just a bunch of air.
I see big pages tweet rubbish like "Can you be a solopreneur if you don't eat breakfast?!🤔". Need i say more?
Here are the reasons why i feel like BID is superior:
1. Knowledge sharing - On twitter you have to fashion your posts and threads to provide "useful content", that leads to missing out key details that happened during your launch/dev
After a failed ad campaign, nobody thinks to make a twitter post highlighting their problems and struggles; in a discord, you can do so effortlessly and it doesn't have to be this whole big post that has to maximise engagement.
Stop trying to sell yourself, just be normal
2. Motivation - Nothing can be more motivating than clocking in everyday to our discord, setting a mini goal, reading about new discoveries by the community (whether that's dev, marketing methods, product validation), and at the time of clocking out seeing what everyone else got done. Its extremely motivating, and the environment is comforting and constantly pushing you forward
3. Speed - Not only is there an increase in quality in the community (in my opinion), but the speed in which you will learn and get feedback will be 10x faster than any other platform. You don't have to worry about your request for feedback to be boosted by the twitter algo, or individually DM your twitter circle.
BID is designed for you to get the most quality out the community during the time you're on your PC working on your startup.
If you've felt the frustrations of BIP on twitter as i and my circle have, i hope you will join us on BuildInDiscord. We're hoping to make an amazing network of hungry solopreneurs, as we clue each other in on hacks and what worked and didn't work for us along the way.
Im looking forward to seeing you guys there, it's going to be one heck of a journey!

Oof, I feel this post in my soul! I've tried the whole #buildinpublic thing on Twitter but quickly realized I was just shouting into the void. 😅
As a fellow aspiring indie hacker, I'd much rather connect with other hungry founders in a smaller, more engaged community. That's why I'm excited to join BuildInDiscord and actually make progress on my little SaaS side project (link in bio).
The idea of clocking in/out each day and getting real-time feedback sounds super motivating. Beats endlessly tweeting at the algorithm gods begging for engagement!
Let's cut through the fluff and get back to helping each other build real, sustainable businesses. Who's with me?? Join me in BuildInDiscord - I'll bring the coffee! ☕️

I actually tried Discord groups before, but the results, well, let's say, they weren't surprising. I was looking for a community relevant to startup topics, but the open groups that Discord recommends are usually dead, and there is not too much activity going on. Finding closed groups is a bit harder. The way I tried to approach it is by looking for influencers that I follow in case they have discord groups. Usually, they have better activity.
Thanks for sharing ur experience, i expected problems with dead servers and just self advertisers
I remember Peter Thiel saying network effects wont work when starting out because of the chicken and egg problem, so the server has to provid some benefit
Thats why we have a Clock-in, clock-out and Findings channel, because at the individual level it works for staying focused and storing valuable hacks/experiences, whether thats loss or success
Im thinking about creating monthly reports from everyones experiences, i reckon itll be highly valuable info
Would love for u to join JD, alot of us there dont only work on our own projects, we work for other startups. Alot of knowledge sharing there (espec when another company is funding it)
Sure, why not. Maybe you'll find some of my ideas useful for managing this group
