Just built a landing page / MVP for livin-in. Roastmasters attack.

I have just finished building a basic MVP and landing page for my side project livin-in.com. Would love feedback. Initially, the landing page was the add a review page but after I had collected a few reviews I decided to make the landing page the list of reviews. If you get what I mean.

I have been told it looks terrible and does not follow the design principles of Steve Krug's book Don't Make Me Think.

If it's a MVP, I think you did a nice job to illustrate what you what to do.

To go further, apply some design principles would be helpful. Try to look at UI Movement / Landingfolio / Muzli

I'm also improving my site, keen to hear your feedback!

Hey @felix12777, thanks so much for the feedback and the design inspiration.

Leaving some feedback on your site.

I'm interested to know what made you change your landing page from /table.php, which actually has a bit of a lead-in summary of what your app does, straight to the data?

Some design tips/feedback for /table (which I think should be your landing page):

    • Easy way to make text pop over an image is to add a black background with some opacity (played around on your site and background: rgba(0,0,0,0.7); looks decent on the div containing all of your text)
    • Move the two actions ('start' & 'explore') next to each other, and change 'Start' to 'Leave a review' or whatever would describe best what the button leads to. Like primary & secondary call to action buttons

    Feedback on the data view:

    • I think this is fine for an MVP, when the visitor knows what they're looking at.
    • The text at the top of the page should be structured a bit differently. 'Add a review' blends into the description of the page and can be easily overlooked.
    • You should definitely have some type of filter or search. I can't think of a case where I would care about a neighborhood in Poland and South Africa at the same time.

This looks like a really cool project and I wish you all the best. Just remember sites like NomadList.com started as a collaborative Google Spreadsheet, it doesn't have to look perfect at this stage. Good Luck 👍

hey @michaielmesserli, thanks so much for the feedback, really appreciate it.

Did the quick changes for today.

      • Changed it back to /table as the landing page, and added the description from the table page to the page with the data on it.
      • Changed the description on the button on the new landing page
      • Changed the description at the top of the data view.

Agreed on the filter, this will be a bit more work so I will put it together in the next couple of days and incorporating abhishekbhardwaj's suggestions.

Thanks again for the valuable feedback and support.

😭 Just sad you did not leave a review.

Looks good! I tried to leave a review now but the button isn't working. I also tried going to the results page and clicking the 'Add a review' button there but it just brings you back to the landing page.

Thanks. Ooops, my apologies, with changes deleted a reference to a class in error. Please try again.

            Cool, creating a review now.

It would be nice to allow skipping questions. For example, I don't really know how reliable emergency services are since I never called them, so my opinion has no weight.

🙏Thanks will definitely incorporate the skip question. Just learnt a bit about your area.

Hey, I just took a look at your page and have some feedback:

    1. You need to explain in more detail what the entire thing is about. Currently it just says that in one line: Crowd sourced home ❤️ reviews. and even that's not prominent enough.

Also, I think you're more reviewing localities right? Home reviews sounds like you physically review real estate.

    2. Add more detail about the project and why you started it i.e., the background. Doesn't have to be huge, just a line or 2 for me to relate to you.

    3. I'm in Canada but the homepage shows results from Poland and South Africa. I know it's a chicken and egg problem, but you should tell me, "there was nothing found near you. But here are some listings from other areas around the world" and then you can add a friendly line "asking me to review my neighborhood".

    4. To a general user, viewing those tables isn't interesting at all. There's too much data being thrown without any context. You should design that layout in more of a Card layout sort of way. Look at what NomadList do for example.

Once you do that, you can add visual cue on each card to tell me that I can just click and open for more details.

Make the card more interesting by using a photo from the locality or the city. Maybe pull something using Unsplash or Google Maps API.

But if it's too much work, you can just style the locality and the country name better within the card to look like a cleanish image -- overlayed on a random background (either of the same country).

    5. "Add Review" should really be done in a model or in the same "flow". If it's on the same site, I don't want to be thrown into another tab.

    6. Find a way to consolidate data. Its good you have data thats specific to streets but you have a row that's just South Africa and another row that's just Cape Town. And then there's more listings from Cape Town. It's really confusing for the end user.

Hi abhishekbhardwaj, thanks so much for the feedback. If there is any way I can repay you. Your feedback has been priceless and I will work through it in detail.

@ybrickman thanks for the feedback. The harsher the better. The original landing page was this page www.livin-in.com/table.php, which described the concept as follows:
"Livin-in is anonymously crowd sourced neighborhood reviews from all around the world.
Tell the story of where you live.
Explore, experience and see what is is like to live in other places."

Will definitely take what you said into account.

      Thanks

It is a very basic MVP to validate my idea.

I did not want to spend months programming (which I have done in the past ) only to see that no one saw sees value in the concept. So I wanted a more transparent build process.

I am finding the average review process at 2-3 minutes, however I have had some people bounce on about question 20.

I signed up to IndieHackers and got the feedback loop going quickly.

The MVP involved just a list of reviews and a basic way to add a review without a lengthy signing up process.

The reviews at this stage were from close friends and family, and being such a small number of reviews it makes it easy for me to moderate, while I build out the product.

Do you see the value of the concept itself, would it be useful to you? Again not in the current state but with a bit more work.

          Again thanks for the feedback
