Making $30k/year from a Substack newsletter

Elena Verna has a Substack newsletter that I regularly follow. It's called Elena's Growth Scoop and it's all about growth & product-led growth, etc.

Yesterday Elena published a post on her Substack journey to making $30k/year from the platform.

Here are some quick stats:

She launched her Substack in March 2023, which is this year.

The way she drove those free/paid signups was mainly through LinkedIn. Elena has a pretty established LinkedIn profile, so that helped a lot.

Some other interesting stats:

  • It takes Elena 3-5 hours to make each post, on average.
  • She also started exploring sponsorships as a revenue source (a lot of free newsletters rely solely on sponroships).

Anyone here has a successful Substack newsletter?

How can I get in touch with you for a possible feature for Indie Hustle?

      Cheers!

in just 7 months, she gained 30K. It's so cool and unbelievable! I wish I could do the same. I'll definitely find her and check it out.

I'm just a beginner when it comes to writing in public. I used to be shy about sharing my writing with others, even though I'm not that young. But now, I tell myself, 'What's the worst that can happen?' If people don't like something, I'll learn more for improvement.

If you're starting a newsletter and want a Substack alternative, hit me up, because I'm just finishing up a WordPress blueprint that combines all the plugins and such that you need to create a ready-to-roll platform. Because it's WordPress, you're in complete control of your platform. And you keep the money you make--nobody's peeling off 10%. Anyway, I need a couple early adopters and will take very good care of them.

I love this idea, can you show it for us?

Running a newsletter on Psychology at psych.substack.com that took 3 years to hit 1k+ subscribers. Not very profitable but this type of stories really inspire!

Thanks for sharing this, Darko! Elena's journey to $30k/year from Substack is truly inspiring. It's amazing to see the impact of LinkedIn in driving signups.

I'm curious to know if there are any specific strategies or approaches that Elena mentioned in her post that you found particularly effective or interesting for growing a Substack newsletter. Learning from success stories like hers is always valuable

Quality content can take you far.

It's why I'm creating my own Newspaper based on YouTube summaries: https://www.tubertimes.com/

    Might do a Newsletter next.

Y'all are welcome to use it as a basis for content. Just give TT some credit :)

Actually, I know the potential of newsletters and working on an exciting newsletter that my audience loves to subscribe to...

*yeah I have high hopes for this, I hope it won't break my heart...

I love the idea of a newsletter, but I'm just struggling to find somewhere to get my first subscribers and just how to grow it overall. I've been watching a ton of videos and have started to try and build an audience over on X (twitter).

I'm in the same boat. Just starting to grow my newsletter. Channels that have performed well for me:

      • ConvertKit's Creator Network: I was lucky enough to meet a few fellow creators with bigger audiences who were nice enough to add me to their recommendations. This has generated the majority of free signups (11) in the 3 weeks.
      • My free digital product: I created a free Notion template about a year ago and in that time the landing page ranked well on Google to the point where it generated about 10 downloads/month. I send an email to every customer with a Subscribe link. This has converted 2 out of the 5 signups I got in the past 2 weeks.
      • Refind: my biggest source of signups is paid. Refind has an ad program for newsletters. My CPA is $1.87. I've generated 90 signups in the past 5 days. BUT the big question for me will be the quality of signups. I'll be pausing the ad now and will observe the open and click rates from this source to see if it's really worth investing in this.

      Plans:

Building that notion template - brilliant. I am a big fan of creators building digital product (both newsletter writers and podcasters). I literally just wrote a post about it on Medium some hours ago (its in my bio).
