Should a project management tool have a free version?

Hey everyone!

I was eager to hear your thoughts about the project management tools which don't have the freemium version, but rather a Free Trial + Paid.

We've recently entered that stage with Infinity (https://startinfinity.com/), and our metrics have stagnated, even dropped a

To be honest, I don't think that pricing is the reason why your metrics are getting down.
Your niche is very, very saturated and I can't imagine how such a young company can expect infinite growth without applying additional efforts all the time.
I looked at your web site and didn't see any tutorials, your blog has only one article. Now, imagine, new management tools appear probably every week and how you think you could be noticed among them?
For example, I have never heard about your product even when I was looking for it.
So, you can play with pricing anyway, like add one more free plan and see if your metrics would grow but I just don't think it's the point.
    Good luck.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Strong point! We're definitely going to focus on including more videos and articles in the following weeks.

We have a Help Center and a Youtube Channel with a lot of videos and articles dedicated to helping our members understand the features and create their use cases in the most flexible way.

Just analyzing, and collecting your thoughts! :) Thank you.

If you have tutorials and articles you hide them too well. I opened your help center and saw only "features and releases" articles. Where are your videos? tutorials?
Another thing is you host your "help center" on subdomain what is indexed separately so it doesn't work for you. And indexing youtube videos is also separated and doesn't help to discover your product.
        Good luck.

Just my two cents :) I recently sat together with a friend and evaluated different project management tools for his startup. As he is just starting out it can get really pricey if you add all these costs of different tools (Team Chat, Support Chat, Project Management) (per user) (per month). I think later on when some money is coming in, companies do not mind to pay. I would onboard these small teams on a freemium plan with the intention that they hopefully upgrade later when their startup is doing well.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I genuinely think it depends on what stage a prospect/lead is at, and for startups/SMEs it is different.

I'll provide a different response than some of the others. I don't want free users in my system. I want quality customers that find value in what I'm offering. Having a free plan as a one or two person company is, in my experience, exhausting and requires so much support for so little payoff. I can't imagine myself ever going the route of freemium again, but then again, I'm not trying to build a massive scale business.

Absolutely! Preach, brother. :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Think of the FREE tier as an acquisition channel (kinda like advertising on Google, FB, etc). Make it functional but very limited. The goal is to convert these already non-paying customers to paid customers when they see the value in the product and wouldn't mind paying for it. But you gotta have a game plan for the conversion process. If not, these free users can just be a drag and a cost to your operation.

I like the comparison! Nice one. You're definitely right - if there's a free version, there needs to be thoroughly defined and prepared conversion process.

Even in the Free Trial period, there has to be one (if the goal is, of course, to have a sustainable business). It just might be a bit tougher, as there are 2 weeks (14 days) to do so.

    Hi Aleksandar,

I really liked the UI of your project when it was like an infinite grid where I could arrange things the way I want. It was really unique.

Now your product looks closely to AirTable or Excel. So a lot less unique.

In the Project Management space you need to be unique to carve your niche.

Regarding freemium: no one has the answer, you need to experiment yourself.

I run a productivity tool in your space, I used to have a freemium model, and switched to free trial.

Freemium was giving us a lot of word of mouths that was hard to quantify. Free trial means that the time we spend on support is well spent, is spent on people who are our target market.

You can still do it in a freemium model, but it is a lot harder. People that are not in your target market will give you feedback, and it is hard to not listen to it.

    Good luck!

By the way, you guys move very fast, it is amazing to see how your UI has changes overtime. This is a great indicator of success! You will find product/market fit. Keep at it!

Woah, an OG one! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the first version of Infinity. We actually pivoted because of the community feedback/requests, which have been amazing. Not an easy process, but it is paying off!

I understand completely. Everything has its own pros and cons. And it just depends on our own strengths and weaknesses which will be the best strategy/way for us.

      Cheers!

Your product is priced higher than JIRA and very close to Asana, JIRA, Trello, Monday, and other big names in the space. At the same time, you never mention how are you better than them. Probably think about creating comparison pages for the main competitors or if you have a strong differentiator or narrow niche than speak to them on your landing.

In regards to the free tier, it is usually more costly than it seems, so think about upgrade path upfront and ideally, figure out what will be behind the paywall.

Oh, comparison pages are definitely a must. We've done one so far; Trello alternative: https://startinfinity.com/trello-alternative, as well as a blog in a similar matter: https://startinfinity.com/blog/best-project-management-collaboration-tools

More is yet to come and are in the plan. :)

      Thanks, dude!
