Recently I came across several controversial ideas about blogging in different communities about blogging. Some had a positive perspective but some were not.
According to my opinion, blogging is a vast topic to be talked about. I'm all ears to anybody's ideas as I'm curious about what the world thinks about blogging in their own perspectives.
Blogging is a hobby for many people but, for many others, blogging is a very valuable medium to establish a personal brand or authority in your field. I have been a passive blogger on tech for almost 7/8 years, here is my work https://stacktips.com/
But my journey has been very on and off. And doing it alongside my day-to-day job is something very difficult to continue with consistency.
Thanks for sharing your ideas and work! You have a nice blog! How are the costs of blogging for you? Do you earn from this blog?
I am doing this as a hobby. Not as a full time blogger yet. So far I have not monetized yet.
Wow great! Blogging as a hobby is a good way of spending time meaningfully. Keep up the good work!
I think blogging can work, but there are some important factors:
Edit:
One more thing is it doesn't have to be a yes/no decision. Try blogging, study the data, see if it works for your business.
Thank you for your ideas. I agree with everything you have mentioned here.
Blogs are awesome if you are a good writer!
Also, I guess most people do blogs in terms of SEO.
Yeah, blogs are awesome for goof writers and attractive content creators.
As you said, most of the people to blogging on SEO terms. However, I think if the content is unique, helpful, beneficial for the communities, it is a win-win for both the blog content readers and the bloggers.
Personally, I see blogging as a powerful skill and a valuable form of expression. It goes beyond being just a hobby; it can establish one's credibility as a trusted source in their field.
I have the same idea as you
For me blogging is a crucial skill, akin to mastering modern tech and philosophy. It's not just a hobby; it builds credibility as a trusted professional source. Call me basic, but I think even a well-crafted LinkedIn profile is a form of blogging, showcasing expertise and thought leadership))
Indeed! What do you think about start a blog on their own rather than blogging only on a big platform like LinkedIn, Medium?
While starting a blog from scratch might seem appealing, it can be time-consuming and resource-intensive. Leveraging established communities like Indie Hackers offers a head start with a ready-made audience. Utilizing the platform's tools and engaging with the community allows you to focus on content creation and connection-building, maximizing your impact without the overhead of managing a standalone blog. It's all about making the most of available resources to reach and resonate with your target audience effectively.
Yeah! But suggest people to start their own blog without depending on a platform. There are few major concerns that I have which supports this argument.
SEO - When we blog on platforms like Medium, Indiehackers we are actually using their domain. Although we publish good content and go among readers positively we cannot start our own blog one day in our name. All the effort will be a waste of time. So from the beginning start a blog on your own with your name or with an owned custom domain worths all the effort we put into.
Owning Data - When we blog on major platforms like I mentioned before, they own the blog data. But if we run a blog on our own, we own everything and we control everything of the blog.
These are the main 2 concerns I have. What do you think?
Absolutely! Both blogging approaches serve different purposes. Starting on Medium or established platforms allows you to gather an audience and gain exposure. Once you've grown and feel the need for creative freedom and full ownership, transitioning to your own domain is a strategic move. A hybrid approach, using established platforms to build your community before venturing into independence, can be a smart strategy for aspiring bloggers
I think it is a great way to share your ideas, knowledge, and expertise with the world.
Yes it is!
I think blogging is show what I'm thinking. some people blogging content in specific areas in himself blog, But some people write everything about themself.
Writing is great thing that can help people to thinking, it's also a share of thought.
Every blog is great for me.
I appreciate and agree with this. If we take a look at what we are doing on social media even, that is microblogging right? a type of blogging after all
I'm not a blogger myself but I feel like blogging on your own website is not the way anymore but blogging on big platform like hackernews are medium is a better alternative. What do you think?
Well, in my opinion, blogging on a big platform like Medium is a good alternative but at the same time as there are a millions of people writing on platforms like Medium, the visibility of the content you write might decrease. But if you own your own blog, that won't be an issue. What do you think on this?
Medium and similar platforms are probably a good starter point but it is limited. I don't know, someone who have used both could tell us. :P
Yeah! I have personally used both. There are lots of limitations when it comes such type big platforms where you have to compete with everybody's content. Shall we discuss more about this?
That'll be a pleasure for me. You can reach me through my email olivier@orphic.ca.
Thank you! Let's discuss via email
Would love to hear more about this discussion myself! Successful blogs? What to do? What not to do? Value add and monetization? 💪 I've not blogged myself so here to support your great post question! 😉
I'm glad that you are passionate about this and I hope you will gain more ideas from this. And also feel free to raise any question you wanna know. I and anybody here will answer for you with the experience I have/they have.
For me newsletter to podcasts to certain type of articles on medium to even twitter threads.. everything is blogging in different format ..so the formats may be evolving on how consumers get information but for creators there is no change in concepts per se
Yeah the evolving of the formats may be based on how the consumers get information. I also agree with that. But when it comes to several domains and niches, the format should be also changed right? For example: let's say a developer is running a blog and he is doing a tutorial on how to setup a development environment with VueJS. Therefore, he may lean more towards to videos, or article tutorial right? So, in that case, the creators should also evolve their method of delivering content in blogging right?
Yes and No..in my view it all comes down to the strength of the creator. We have podcasts and videos and written blogs on same topics and as long as it is good and reaches the right audience it will be successful
I agree with that point.
I think blogging is still king! But with AI I'm not sure how the algorithms will change to counteract them. I think it will become about real live experiences and being able to prove how one got the know how VS simply putting words down on a blog.
I feel the same. And there are emerging tools to detect those AI generated content and I think there will be algorithms to detect and reject those content when crawling.
It's starting to feel like a business idea! The growing need for tools to detect AI-generated content opens up an opportunity to indie hackers like ourselves.
Yes it is
I would say that blogging is more alive than it's been in years-- especially if the writing is authentic. People are done with Wikipedia-style articles bursting at the seams with keywords that read like cardboard.
A blog needs to be either entertaining or educational. Those are literally the only two reasons people read online. If it manages to be both? You've got a winning recipe.
That's the point. I also feel the same. I love blogs like that. Those are really useful in different domains for people.
I think a blogger can manage both with the right knowledge and right tools.
My opinions about blogging are as follows:
1.Not all products are a good fit for blogging: Blogging works well for complex or technically advanced products, and those with a continuous flow of content. It helps people understand the product's principles or provides a variety of new topics to discuss.
2.Blogging may not be suitable for all product stages: In the early stages of a product when there's no traffic or social media following, it's challenging to build a user base and spread the word through blogging.
3.Blogging may seem easy to start, but it's highly competitive and demanding: Producing "high-quality" content requires more than just writing random articles, and gaining traffic is not as simple as hopping on popular trends.
4.Blogging demands exceptionally high-quality content: To gain attention, recognition, and virality, blog posts need to be consistent, high-quality, engaging, and emotionally resonant.
5.If your brand already has a certain reputation, high-quality blogging content can further establish you as an industry expert, enhancing your image and authority.
Thank you for this great piece of information. Are you a blogger?
I'm not a blogger myself. My main focus is on early-stage product operations, and I have some experience in launching and driving user growth. Blogging is a medium that I've always been interested in.
Glad to hear that you are interested in blogging. Anything you want to share with me and others about your blogging interest?
That's interesting! Blogging does indeed have diverse opinions. I'm open to hearing different perspectives too. It's fascinating to see how people view blogging in their own unique ways. Let's keep the conversation going! 😊📝
Yes it is! I'm glad that I raised this question. I also got to know more about what others think about blogging.
I think it’s great, even if it’s just for yourself. I don’t know about you, but writing things down help me formulate thoughts and put things in order.
I blog about hard problems that I’ve solved with how-to posts. It’s my way of giving back to the community as I’ve gotten so much help from other developers by reading their blogs.
As a person who use a lot of blog to solve my problems, I thank you! I should try to write blogs myself. Where could I find your How-to posts?
Right on, you can see all my posts at https://clintmcmahon.com. Blogging also helps with my writing, I’m a terrible writer but hoping to turn that around with blog posts.
As they say, "Practice makes perfect"! Keep it up!
Wow! I love to see that someone has decided to start blogging. Good luck. A tip from me:
Make sure to do all the research relevant to your niche. Like what other blogger with your same niche are doing, what are the problems and questions that readers have in your niche that you can write about and give solutions, etc.
I think when it comes to blogging, writing about themselves which makes others truly inspired, writing about tutorials, how-to articles can make a huge difference.
Thank you for the tips! I thought about starting here on indiehackers by asking questions relevant to the niche I think is appropriate for me. I think I would get useful insight from it.
Thanks for your great idea!
