I guess most of the main stream media gets their hit pieces by putting an overblown shock and fear into them. That is their business model.
However, even though I don’t believe the extent of these claims but to be honest I am worried.
AI will change some jobs significantly e.g. copy writing, generating an average long form content, creating a commonly used coding block etc. are going to impact som jobs.
But AI is good at average tasks. If you want anything to stand out which needs more nuance and creativity then it needs be performed by a human.
I guess the author never used Chat GPT.
I always read these articles on AI with interest. Yours intrigued me because you make a very valid point that these predictions aren't anything new. The truth is, we really don't know what the future holds. Tomorrow an AI with consciousness could be a thing or maybe that will never happen and AI will always have the limits you mention. Keep learning, keep developing your skills, try and be useful and yes, try and get into that top 5% and you'll always be needed (hopefully).
I work in law, and from where I'm standing, fears of widespread job losses due to AI seem a bit exaggerated. If anything, AI is more of a tool than a threat in our field. For instance, in legal research, AI algorithms can analyze precedents and statutes at lightning speed, freeing up time for lawyers to focus on strategy and interpretation.
Take it from Dr. Nick Oberheiden, a respected lawyer who mentioned in this article that he encourages us to approach AI with a balanced mindset. We shouldn't fear its advancements but rather welcome them while remaining vigilant.
The more productive an employee is, the more valuable they are. AI tools which enhance productivity only make it more worthwhile to hire Designers/Engineers or any other professional.
Not only is the fear overblown, it's completely irrational imo.
I think of AI as what calculators are to mathematicians, a tool to increase productivity. At least in the context of ChatGPT or Copilot, they have been a useful tool in my day to day, but to say that they'll be able to design, architect and build out an entire system by themselves is a bit of a stretch.
But knowing how fast technology progresses, I could be totally wrong !
It is true that the increasing use of AI in various industries may lead to some job displacement among certain professionals. However, it is also important to note that AI can also create new job opportunities and improve overall efficiency in many industries. Additionally, many experts believe that AI will augment human capabilities rather than fully replacing them.
It's important for professionals to be aware of the potential impact of AI on their industries and to consider upskilling or reskilling to stay relevant in the changing job market.

Fears of job losses due to AI are overblown for several reasons. First, AI technology is still in its early stages and is not yet fully capable of taking over entire job roles. Second, AI often works in tandem with humans, rather than replacing them entirely, as it can be used to automate certain tasks and streamline operations while leaving the more complicated aspects to be handled by experienced professionals. Finally, many jobs that are currently at risk of being replaced by AI are in industries that are already facing disruption, such as retail and manufacturing, and so job losses due to AI would be a symptom of a larger issue.
Yes, there is a fear that AI will replace many jobs. I might take a while. But instead professionals should develop good technology where more man power is required.
AI cannot replace humans for sure, but humans with good skills to use AI will take away a lot of jobs. This will not happen all of a sudden anyways.
I think humans that use AI will replace humans who don't though. AI can help you to 10x whatever job you do if you know how to use it well.
For now AI will automate away the mundane tasks and copy from last year and update tasks.
We need a new version of AI called Cognitive systems to fully replace knowledge workers, or Neuro symbolic AI, but that's likely a decade away.
The fears of job losses could be overblown, because it's humans who created Al, so why should humans fear to lose jobs to what they created? Without humans, there would be no creation called Al, meaning the constant element is the human element, and there would always be jobs for humans who know how to create Al.
I think this misses that the humans who created the AI are not necessarily the ones who stand to lose their jobs to the AI. It is one thing to believe that more jobs will be created working on AI but it’s probably going to hurt many individuals in the short to medium term.
Glad to see this angle being discussed. In certain fields, like radiology and healthcare, AI is actually increasing the demand for human experts (however, these experts in demand are those that are comfortable with and trained in being paired with AI augmentation). See this article and the included links for more:
That's exactly the problem for why people fear losing jobs, the 95%. Cause fundamentally not Everyone can be in the top 5%.
Yes, fully agree with this. We would need fewer people than before to do the same work and there is no guarantee AI will create new jobs for semi-skilled labor.
AI cannot completely replace humans because we need humans to put the brains inside an AI. Jobs will always be there but the technologies might change, that is why I look at keeping pace with the technology spectrum and keep oneself relevant is important. Rather than relying on technology one should rely on the capability of problem solving - this way even if a particular technology becomes obsolete, one's relevance will stay intact.
Finally, an article (and writer) that provides links to support their points. Yes, this fearmongering over AI replacing tech jobs has been around for a long time and every time a new form of AI comes out the debate starts all over again. For how fast we say tech is moving, none of these doomsday predictions have come true - you are right. I wish more people would listen to this. Great article 👏
