Let's try free trial instead of free plan!

We received a lot of feedback on our previous model, which had 3 plans (Free, Plus and Pro).

We discontinued the free plan because it didn't give our users enough features to judge our product by.

We kept the Plus and Pro plan, but added a few features. In addition, when you register, you automatically get the Plus plan for free for seven days.

If we have statistics on whether we get more paying customers we will post about it!

Have a nice day!

"Free" isn't the competitive advantage or value proposition you think it is.

It mostly attracts brokies with neither the ability nor the intention to pay for your product.

And the vast majority of those people don't have any value whatsoever in advertising/marketing your products for you either, because their reach and influence is negligible.

    1. 2

100% agreed. Also many people will tell you that the clients who pay you the least, often take up the most of your time.

For my products I've moved away from free tiers to free trials and it was great. I've got much more involved customers, and I didn't notice any big drop in conversions and sign ups. On the other hand it freed my time to do less support to free tiers and invest it in other things.

Totally agreed. Lots of support tickets and conversion is shallow from Free to paid plans. We tried the card first approach with the free trial and it worked better.

Depending on your goals, another common strategy is to start all free users on a pro trial, and then downgrade to free at the end of the trial if the user decides not to become a paying customer.

Slack does this, and it's quite effective if followed up with customer outreach. Loss aversion is a powerful motivator.

      1. 1

In our next project we will try that!

    2. 1

Ah interesting. I might try this.

  4. 4

Sounds really good :) I'm curious to hear more about how that goes

I think in this case it's much better to have a free trial than a free plan.

The trial incentivizes people to take action and use the product instead of having just another account and just another password saved.

Plus, people only really value what they pay for.

This is a great idea, so much recent conversation around offering one or the other, why not offer both!

From personal experience (using a service with a trail), i hate having to put my card details in until it comes to renewing because i truly like the product. Just a passing comment for consideration!?

      In our case,
we don't collect card information until Free Trial ends
(or if the user subscribe during the trial period manually)

After free trial ended, we limit the user privileges and a popup opens that he need to subscribe to use the site, but don't worry, we collect his feedbacks until that.

I am doing the same. My first product, NoCodeLetters, had a free trial(maybe too generous) and I had very hard time converting users to paid customers. For my current product Breeze I have completely moved away from Free Tier and just have a 30 day Free trial(without CC).

    Will share how things go!

  8. 2

Does your free plan require a credit card or not? And why?

    1. 1

      Free plan is discontinued.
If you mean our trial, no, we doesnt collect credit card until trial ends. In this case we does not break the registration flow.

Thank you, this post has a lot of valuable insights in the comments. Stuff that I haven't even thought about.

Just a quick heads up: you'll want to check your homepage on Firefox. I know it's a small share, but I'll bet FF is over-represented among your users.

  11. 2

This is exactly what we're doing in the new year. What did you do with existing users on the old free plan?

    1. 1
      1. You don't have to deal with people who were signed up for a paid plan.
      2. Those who had a free plan were programmatically subscribed to Plus plan with trial.
      1. 1

what percentage of those on the free plan have been converting so far?

  12. 2

I plan to implement a trial in the same manor you have. Will be interesting to see the results.

  13. 2

Yes free version doesn't include more version as pro and plus (my point of view why not run an LTD for specific license) ?

  14. 2

I've been thinking about this as well, and I've decided to try a trial period on our SaaS product Mysql query generator .

I offer a 7-day free trial to everyone who signs up, and if they don't like the AI2sql by then, they can cancel at any time. I think this will give people enough time to really use our product without feeling obligated to buy it if they don't like it.

    1. 2

We are thinking the same way!

  15. 2

This way, we can get a feel for the features and benefits of the paid version before committing to it.

  16. 2

It's a nice strategy, but I think the free plan needs to be a very very short/preview of the products, a few resources to be used, and only that... In your case example: the free plan allows users to receive up to 5 of feedback monthly. Or something like that.

    Btw, nice website🔥

    1. 1

When we had a free plan, we used that strategy for that, but we received a lot of complain about that. :/

  17. 2

Wow, I love this tool! I am always on the lookout for new and creative ways to creatively express myself.

    1. 1

Feel free to try it out ! :)

  18. 2

Interesting! Have you considered A/B testing the CTA on the pricing?
Choose Plan / Get Started / Start 7-day trial?

    1. 1

Not yet ! "Choose Plan" was our first intuition :)

  19. 1

If you are looking for a more personalised approach, you may wish to consider starting all free users on a pro trial and then degrading back to free at the end of the trial if the user decides not to become a paying customer.https://wonapk.com/netherite-minecraft-the-best-level/

No user has ever written in to say they want this, so we haven't put it in yet. But it doesn't seem like a difficult thing to do.
Currently only the popup colours can be changed to individual taste.

In the Plus plan there are 5 full feature and 1 limited (3 project)
The Pro plan has an addition that he can see what Browser has the feedback came from and what url (/, /documentation)
