How I changed my life by just writing down my thoughts

I have turned my mind into the "ultimate idea dispenser" by just writing down my thoughts in Pentime*. It is an experience that I have never had before and it changed my life completely, so today I want to share this experience with you too!

*For those who don't know yet: Pentime is an offline app that helps capture and organize thoughts the way our brain works (in form of time blocking & bullet journal).

Another problem I used to face was task overwhelm. I lost control, couldn't think clearly, couldn't keep track of everything. And it led me to an issue called "mental health problems."

But then, I've found a way to fix all of this. It's writing.

No seriously, writing has been an absolute game-changer for me!

I found that writing brought freedom to my mind, especially for my mental health. I have shared my journey of how I solved this problem here.

I started waking up in the morning and just dumping everything I could think of into Pentime. Then I identified 2-3 "goal tasks" and made it a priority to finish them.

In terms of the writing method I use bullet journal.

My personal format is: Rapid write down some bullet points + quick journal about my thoughts and feelings.

But why is writing? There is a reason!

Yeah it sounds easy, but:

  1. Writing down is just half of the side, you have to write in the right way to get it to work!
  2. This is not for one time, you have to do it consistently, make it become a habit, your future will thank you later!

Here is how I use Pentime to write down my thoughts effectively:

This is a whole new experience in writing thoughts for me, actually. It helps me expand ideas, break down the tasks, and keep track of things on the go. As I said, it has been an absolute game-changer for me!

Now let's go to the point...

1. Stick to the timeline!

  • The timeline (24-hour block) is the place I use to capture all my thoughts, ideas, feelings, and moments, even my to-do list. It's optimized to store thousands of thoughts, so don't worry and just dump all your thoughts here.
→ Just tap on any time block you want and jot down whatever pops up on your mind here.

2. One line rule

  • Each thought should stay in a single line. Write them one by one, like you are making a list with some bullet points. If it's long, cut it down into multiple lines. More line work better. (as shown in the video)
→ This will help you read faster & easier for organizing later on.

3. Jot down quickly

  • Keep it short to write it fast, use keywords, don't be too wordy, just don’t care about grammar or spelling mistakes.
→ You will synchronize with your speed of thought if you do it right & fast!

4. Group your thoughts

  • Pick one main thought that can be a header for your group of thoughts, style it by format or color, then continue to jot down your thoughts right below. A group of thoughts should have at least 3-5 items. The more, the better! (If you fill all 24-time blocks, it means that each day is a full day of meaning!).
→ This will make you think better and be more organized.

5. Give it time...

  • Just relax, play your favorite music, give it at least 30 minutes, then start writing everything that pops up in your mind. Make it become a routine.

So how do I know if I am doing it right?

  • You will feel freedom in your mind (because there is nothing noisy left in your mind).
  • You will know exactly what to do next (because of the clarity in everything). And finally, your mind will turn into an idea dispenser!

This is your takeaway:

  • Quickly jot down your thoughts right on the timeline.
  • Keep each thought as short as you can.
  • Cut down your thoughts into multiple single lines.
  • Journal just like you are making a list of bullet points.
  • Use keywords, don’t care about grammar or spelling.
  • Group your related thoughts into a time block.

And that's it. Thank you for reading! Feel free to ask any questions, I would love to answer all. Thanks!

I wish I had this app when I was little, had so many billion-dollar ideas back then

In fact, you can still do it now 😊 that's why we built this app.

I definitely agree with the benefit of writing ideas down!!

I've been doing that for a years but across different sorts of online tools: Evernote way back in the day, Trello when I started digging into "productivity" tooling, Google Keep for when I just wanted to quickly jot down something to reflect on later on (which I actually still incidently use today: old habits die hard...), and lately mostly Notion, which I find find awesome because you can both start really small and light (à-la Keep) and then expand into full fledged documents (à-la Evernote) while ALSO having the ability to mix in task and project tracking (à-la Trello). It's really an awesome tool that I can't stop recommending !!

But its flexibility is actually also its main weakness IMHO: you need to build systems on top of it to actually get real value/habits from it.

Anyway, it's a whole topic in itself, so I'll surely write a piece on that when I'll have the IH street cred to do so ^^

    Thanks for sharing Pentime!
    I'll definitely have a try!!

      Really nice, mate!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience.

And you will get it soon, can't wait to read your story! Followed you btw 😊

        Thanks a lot Lee!

Yeah I should soon be able to share full fledged posts ^^

But definitely need to pick my battles (whole other subject XD) and I'm more in building mode these past few days ;-)

nice, i'm also a fan of documenting ideas. I think you'll also find the concept of Zettlekasten and personal knowledge management interesting.

Oh, sounds really interesting, I'll definitely take a deep look at it!

Haha I liked the fact that you said to play some music to get into it. It helps me a lot keep my sanity and I've gotten my thoughts a lot more mature and organized as I reach the end of my 20s.

    Cheers man.

The same to me bro. It was a truly happy time when I got into myself. To answer the question of life seriously.

      Cheers man!

I found it difficult to write down thoughts sometimes, especially ones related to stressful events that I don't know the outcomes yet. I started to keep a diary this year and found clarity on a lot of issues despite the occasional stress. I suppose the stress comes from having to face the issue head-on.

Thanks for the tips and all the best with Pentime!

      Thanks, vyp!

The same thing happened to me at first. 😃 Feel so hard to write things down.

Until I found a better way to write down thoughts effortlessly, now I kept doing this every day.

It helps me think clearly in this world of "information overload." 😊
