My wife's app went viral on X and made $233 in one day

It all started when my wife sent me this photo in January of 2022.

She asked if I can turn this into an app for her. I said, "Yeah, sure thing babe! I'll be done in a week." 😅

Product development

Well... 10 months later I had kept procrastinating until December of 2022 when I eventually started the design and development of the app.

It was my first build-in-public product. When I started I didn't expect anything really. It was a FREE app. People following my journey loved the app and the story behind it. So I kept posting and updating them.

A couple months after I launched, people started asking for premium features like cross-platform support, sync / backup, and rich text formatting, image attachment, etc.

I quickly added those, and added a paywall as well. I had to go down this path since these features would require a server for them to work.

Going viral

Fast forward 11 months later: Someone made a post about the app on X and it went viral, generating 400k+ views and 400+ quotes in one day.

24 hrs after the app went viral:

  • 23 purchases
  • $222 in revenue
  • 1,061 installs

This blew my mind. I didn't imagine the app would go viral or generate this much revenue in a single day.

I guess what they say is true: just build something useful and people would come.

The app is called Obim, which means "my heart" in my native language.

Available for download on iOS and Android: obim.lunabase.xyz.

That's incredibly impressive, Amani! Proud of her. $233 in one day - that's quite the accomplishment!

Very interesting, given that lately people here don't talk that great about X as a distribution channel 😅 Congrats Amani!

I don't know why... But it really does feel fantastic.

But I don't know why... And that's annoying me. :)

Do you have any insight into the 'why'?

    That's a good story.

I was under 100 followers when one of my posts went viral and was viewed 8k+ times. I love the algorithm of X, Reddit, and IndieHackers.

That's a funny story, a both simple and great idea :) really visual way to see how you felt some days/weeks/months ago

Damn that's actually a cool idea. Can i see the tweet? Maybe you could pay an influencer on TikTok to promote it? clearly an opportunity for more viral marketing campaigns there

That's awesome! I love the style direction you took it in, and the scale of Awesome to Awful is great. Can I ask what stack you use to dev?

      I used Ionic + Capacitor + React.

This is amazing. Building an audience while you build is very important

Second this. Building an audience has helped me validate what I'm doing, and my sanity.

  20. 1

Do you have any plans or have you already done anything to engage with those that have shared it on X?

Great Idea :) not too complicated and kept simple - I like it!
