It's almost midnight here in the UK and just before hitting the sack (going to bed) I decided to quickly check hacker news.
It took so long to load that I knew something was going on. Turns out Sam Altman has been fired from Open AI and the internet is going crazy!
Word on the street is that Sam Altman got fired because he failed to recognise that gpt would be widely referred to as gipety and someone else has registered the domain name gipeties.com and is raking in the money ;)
No, but on a serious note. Anyone got any insights into why this might have happened? This is pretty wild.
One interesting theory I've seen is that Altman moved too fast and broke too many things with this latest release, i.e. he failed to get his team to do due diligence on security vulnerabilities.
Here's a recent timeline hinting at this possibility from nikcub on HN:
Doubt they'd oust him over this issue alone though? Kind of frightening knowing there's drama and instability at an organization sitting on such a powerful technology.
I’ve seen some people mention that maybe Sam was over promising against the will of the board. Seems quite timely given that DevDay was so recent. to be honest I was quite shocked to hear that OpenAI would be compensating GPT creators. I was also shocked to hear them take such a bold move with “Copyright Shield” to legally protect OpenAI users. Wondering if not everyone was on board with these kinds of decisions.
I think it is just a question of opinion at this point. The board has now changed his position to make money quickly, like all others companies.
It's probably a big problem. Why the company's leaders would want to fire the head of a successful and fast-growing company for such small reasons, especially if people really like them.
I am interested in knowing how, the gipeties was created.
To the best of my knowledge I don't think there is an official API for getting all the current GPTs in the wild.
Hi there, there isn't an official API so right now I am relying on manually finding GPTs as well as user submissions.
There are now so many directories though that it is quite easy to find GPTs. You can even find a directory of directories of directories of GPTs ;)

The next step now is to allow people to curate their own collections which is what gipeties.com is going to focus on next.
There are some updates. It looks like the board walked back on their action and are considering rehiring him. The company is allegedly in a freefall since the news broke out and people from the staff may leave with Altman if he were to create a new company.

I'm sure it's a serious issue, the last thing a company's board would want to do is fire the CEO of a successful and fast-growing company, especially if he is popular.
