I've seen/heard this from many people but thought that it was worth talking about. How do you know what "success" is unless you've thought about it?
Yes, we know startups fail.
But seriously...we spend so much time thinking about failure that it stops us from even trying. Yes, we all know that startups fail 100% of the time and that you have to be persistent to a fault, but what of the successes?
Think about it like a funnel (not difficult for the marketers out there). We throw thousands of startup ideas in the top and only one or two come out of the bottom as successful businesses. While daunting, it is possible! You won't get close if you think about failure and the difficulties of the process.
Instead, what would it be like to succeed?
What does success look like for you and your business? Thinking about this will help you plan for when you actually get there. I'm applying this mindset for our two closest goals–securing five beta test companies and getting into two accelerator programs (maybe even winning some money from one of them).
It's fun to do! I'm thinking about what $15,000 and even more mentorship will do for our business. Why not? Who cares if we don't get it? If we miss on these goals, that's ok. I'm not setting expectations, I'm thinking about possibilities while recognizing the probabilities.
Dreaming is helpful.
Regardless of the outcome, we'll continue moving forward and setting new goals. Visualizing success will help us plan for the future. If we don't succeed, we'll start again. Keep dreaming, it's helpful and it's fun to do!
My opinion so completely opposite from yours. i think that dreaming of success is giving you false perspective on things. You are all hyped up, motivated, ready to concur the world but the truth is far from that. It's giving you false reality.
And then when reality strikes you and smashes you to the ground then you wake up. I think that people should be more realistic and careful. It's fine to be motivated but also look at the "dark" side and prepare yourself for the worst.
That's how life usually works, unless you are really lucky.
What really worked for me is to stop caring. More I didn't care more I was successful at something.
Hey Dario, totally get it! I'm not really disagreeing with you.
What I was trying to say was that many people don't even think of what it's like to be successful at something and planning for when they reach their goals.
Definitely agree with the standpoint of not-caring or not setting expectations and just doing the work.
